Hardest commute so far - WIND!

Today I rode home (slight uphill) on my 48x16 SS into a 26mph average (with 39 mph gusts!) headwind. I managed a 13.8 mph average speed only because about 1/3 of the trip was perpendicular to the wind. I was standing up, hands in the drops, back parallel to the top tube, and going less than 12mph at 90% effort. Crazy.

Any of you other ABQ commuters get caught in this wind storm?

I ride west for half of my home commute, which just happens to be the direction the wind comes out of almost every afternoon around here, so I know exactly what you mean!

And, being the sucker that I am, I'm moving next weekend.... 5 miles farther west. *sighs* Ah, well... it's a nice place.

Isn't it nice when you have something unusual to write about? Keeps the boredom at bay. It must have been fun.

There was one morning commute a while back, I was riding againts the wind, and the wind was blowing so hard that even though I was riding down a long DOWN hill, and peddling as hard as I could, I was litteraly going nowhere. Maybe 2 mph at most. I ended up having to get off my bike and stand next to some trees for a moment, so I could get a breath of air, then walked my bike to where it wasnt surrounded by open fields.

I hit a windstorm in the fall, one part of my commute going downhill where I usually touch 30 mph, headwind slowed me down to 13 mph. Kinda cool. Naturally we lost power at work (and in town in general), so I got to go home early, but the wind had died down so no comparable tailwind.

It's easier to deal with mentally if you think of it as resistance training. I have a headwind here half the time so I had to either look at it in a different light or quit commuting, and I love bike commuting.

The wind out here is bad enough to ride against, but I say f#$k it and ride anyway.
No other alternative and it builds up strength like the other dude said.
Only thing that makes it worse are the particles being stirred up by it.
The sunglasses stop the vision impairment, but then you end up choking on dust anyway.

The wind out here has been nasty lately. Gusts up to 30-40 mph.
It's an 8.5 mile ride from the office to work, but I swear I biked 10 miles or more....

/two steps forward, one step back....
