Dangerous commuting
I just started riding to work and I was amazed at just out dangerous it is. Mybe I picked the wrong time of year to start commuting to work. If Houston's deadly traffic doesn't get me, I'm afraid the heat and humidity will.

Yep, anytime the heat index is over 100 DEGF, it can be tough. Drink a lot, before, during, and after your ride.
With public school just starting back up, traffic patterns are in flux, as everyone finds their new paths.
As for the handling traffic part, surf this forum for ideas or perhaps take a LAB Road I course.

Take it easy until the temp gets better. when I was in Texas I left as early as I could manage in the morning that meant only the afternoon ride was truly brutal. Dealing with traffic gets better with experience. You'll find the right route/time to make it better, and you'll grow thicker skin. I lived in North Texas and found that on the whole texans were more pleasant to bike around than the citizens of other states I've been in, of course in Houston the situation may be different.

There's a Bike I course coming up September 23-24 if your interested. Check out the League of American Bicyclists website under "education", or the Liesure Learning website.
I found a cool new place to park my bike at school though where teenage hands won't come near it!

Yeah, where are you starting from and going to? Routing is critical in Houston.
Here's the URL for the Sept23-24 course
