I didn't vote because I haven't driven my car to work this year yet. I decided that I've never ridden and wished I'd driven, but every time I drove I wished I'd ridden.

I've gotten to the fitness level required to ride every day, so that's out now. My son is sleeping through the night, so lack of sleep is out now.

#1 is now weather. I do ride in rain, but often opt for the bus on those days...

My biggest issue is golf--can't fit clubs on the bike. Twice a week in the summer I have to drive. I feel like quitting because I like to bike so much, but I enjoy the commradarie of the league, and I like to play. Leagues just ended, so I should do better.

Today it is pouring rain, so next week is when I hope to start my 5 times a week riding in.

John,
Sounds like distance or time factor is the main problem keeping you from biking in more often. Which did you vote?

When I was commuting regularly, the usual roadblocks were either the occasional poor weather in the morning (I don't like arriving to worked soaked but getting home soaked is fine!) or the need to do something after work which is not compatible with my bicycle.

I know what you mean. My route takes me by a few churches. I use that area for intervals.

I voted time/obligations. Sometimes I have to run errands or what not. While many of the stores are within biking distance, I don't feel like leaving my bike in front of the store (they do not all have bike racks, or places to lock up). PLus, I'm uncomfortable with leaving my panniers on the bike.

If I could get 'secure' panniers, I would probably do some more errands

I voted time factor.

getting up is a pain and I can pull it off. my biggest thing is the time factor.

Going to work is not a problem, after work is an issue often enough.

I get out of work at 4:30 (never done at 4:30 more like 4:45) by the time I change ,pack the carradice, lock up the office (im always last out if I ride) by the time I actually start riding its 5:10 pm my trip home if I take the Bike trail is 19 miles with 3 big climbs the last being 3.5 miles when I get off the bike trail (BTW GREAT HILL IN THE MORNING TO SCREAM DOWN)

ANYWAY If I ride home Im not getting in till 6:15- 6:30 pm then I have to put bike away clean up again, change and by that time its around 7pm and thats great if nothings going on or I dont have anything to do or need to make a trip to hardware store...

the other issue with the time factor is my other half is home by 4:30 - 5:00 and she gets ansy waiting till 7pm before im ready to go anywhere. other things are like getting invited to family members house for supper or whatever during the week or nieces and nephews are at Grandmas for the evening most times its around 6pm that were required to show up (not if Im on the bike).

One thing now that will help a little is the busses in our area all have bike racks now so I could Bike in bus home though I wont save a ton of time Ill be home at 5:45pm - 6 but I wont have to clean up change ...

I voted for "no safe route".

Not for me, not like I have the safest route out there or anything, but for all those poor people who work in those corporate parks on those huge 6 lane near highway roads and few viable side streets between where they live and work. I have a friend out on Long Island stuck in such a situation where people find it safer and far easier to drive across the road rather to the restaurants rather than try to walk across or walk 10 minutes to the nearest crosswalk...

Huh? I guess my main reason would be that I'm ill and not going in to work. The only other reason(s) I've used in the past year are freezing rain (before I got my studded tire winter bike), and hauling my hockey equipment (I don't have a trailer, but have been considering it).

Yesterday I was going to ride in but it about it was extremely foggy early in the morning. While driving in to work I thought to myself that I wouldn't want to be on a bike right now because it was so thick. I just worry about not being seen by the cagers.

sleep for sure. I'll stay up to late and just not be able to get going and out the door in time.

Only reason I won't commute on the bike is if I have to attend a conference or seminar in the morning and I have to go straight there without going to work. At work we have a shower.

I voted for "time factor", but it's not really time (my only other option unless I suddenly decide to buy a car is public transit - and that's not faster). My reasons do tie in with other obligations though: sometimes my family wants to pick me up after work so we could go somewhere - and there is no room to stick a bike in the car.

When I ride my car to work it is because I am too LAZY to ride my bike. and since that was not a option on the poll I did NOT vote....

There are three reasons I will drive in, all dealing with time:
1. Conflict between my wife's running days (5 miles) and me having an early meeting. I have to stay home with the three sleeping children until she returns from running and then I can't get to the meeting on time if I bike.
2. Late meetings. When I know I have a late meeting I usually drive....maximize time with my children before bedtime.
3. Have to drive to the airport or an offsite meeting during the day at work.

I still bike commute 14 days out of 20 or so per month.

Voting lack of sleep but adding...I scrap the ride if I feel any sort of muscle weariness -- usually from pushing too hard the days before

I didn't vote because there was no "I work from home" choice.
The last time I commuted to work was in around '86 or so. Since then I havn't been able to because I have to have a vehicle for the work I did. Now that I am working from home, I still need to have a vehicle when I leave the house to carry all the tools I need, I do ride 4 times a week and walk 2 times a week.

None of the above keeps me from commuting. Only 2 things keep me from commuting. First, Treacherous ice or frozen over snow with ruts. Second, if I have to carry a bunch of stuff from work - happens about once a quarter.
