I tried to buy a house that was about an hour's ride from work, after hearing friends complain that it was hardly worth suiting up for their 1/2 hour trip. I'm glad I did.

Ummm... that's their problem isn't it?

Let them perceive you that way. It's all well and noble to put your life on hold for everyone else, but my experience suggests that it's unlikely to be appreciated. It's also a tip of the iceberg situation -- once you forego one ride, you'll be expected to forego riding more and more often until it becomes hard to "justify" riding at all. I've been through that, and I have no intention of going through that aggravation again. And don't forget that the person with a list of things to do might not necessarily be as keen on moving to a longer commute as you are, so the same problem arises.

When I first started commuting my commute was 5 miles each way. After a while, I was tacking on 10 miles to the ride home. Then, I decided I wanted to move into a cheaper apartment. One of my requirements was that the ride to work be at least 9 miles. It turned out to be a little over 13.

It's great during fair weather and the long days of summer, but as the days grow shorter, weather becomes less agreeable, I become less enthusiastic about commuting. What I would put up with/could get away with for a 5 mile commute becomes unreasonable for the 13 miler.

All in all though, I am glad I did it, and I'm just looking for a way to steel myself to ride despite less than ideal conditions.

Nah, I've never moved to increase my commute. I have turned down a job because it was too near to my home.
