Not really. I have one long downhill section of my commute that I use it on. I have hit 35mph fully loaded and feel I could still go faster but I do not have the needed skill t operate a bike at those speeds! I have a 22th for the rear I might give a try as well. I am still getting used to the bike as whole. I was riding a 1978 Trek triple w/ 6 speed freewheel and Bar-end shifters and moustache bars as my summer bike. This bike is great but I don't know what to do with all of the spare time since I am not shifting or thinking of shifting!

Awesome job! That is one beautiful and functional bicycle. I have been contimplating going the Nexus 8 route on my San Jose ala Sheldon Brown. How does the twist shifter mounted on the end of the drop bar work for you? Is it a natural movement to shift? I bet it is sweet to be able to change gears while stopped at a light. Let us know how it serves you in those cold PA winters!

You have tempted me to sin once more. I shall not covet my neighbor's bike. 8spd internal hub, generator hub, nice fenders, Brooks sprung saddle - everything I've been curious about trying.

Very nicely done - enjoy.

You already know where I live. Your purchase (as much as it pained me to sell that Dawes in your avatar) helped me finish this bike! How is that English beauty treating you?

I am going to take a look at a bike for sale at $20 described as World Tour. I imagine its a Voyageur. If my end product looks anything like yours, I'll pee my pants.

A World Tour(?) will remain a Voyageur only in your imagination. Both are good bikes built for different purposes. I prefer the World Tourist setup for commuting. Bought both at garage sales for $15 each.

This is a Voyageur:

and this is a World Tour(ist):

Can you tell which one it is from this picture? I had never heard of a World Tourist before but I've seen and owned the Voyageur.

I can't, perhaps someone more knowledgeable about Schwinn can. The drop handle bars and decals don't look like an original World Tourist. If it is in good condition, I'm sure it is a good bike for $20.

What did the mystery bike turn out to be? Can it be modified to become a bike similar to Fender1's bike?

Thanks! I am currently running 35mm studded Nokians (106 Happ) on the bike and made a set of mud flaps. The Nokians fit with out much fender adjusting. The only issue is how much more difficult it is to ride w/ studded tires! It would also fugure that this is one on the warmer winters in PA in recent memory! No snow, no ice but I am ready when it comes! I really enjoyed doing the conversion and really enjoy the bike. I really like the Nexus 8 in a road frame for commuting.

Not a "hijack" at all! I put up pics to show people, like myself, who were a bit hesitant to work on thier own bikes that with a book, tools and paitience you could get it things done yourself. That said, I had a local shop build the wheels fro me as it is above my current "skill" level. Please feel free to PM me if you have questions. I would be happy to help anyway I could, conversion or not.

36lbs now with studded Nokians and my office moved so I now have two large climbs as a part of my commute! I also have to carry my clothes each day (and it is a full suit) as I have no storage at work. I have not weighed the bike and related gear toghether as it might freak me out, but to say I am closing in 50 lbs would not be an exageration.

I did. I used a piece of 3/8 all thread and a couple of nuts and washers. I tightend (expanded) from the inside of the chainstays and spread the rear from 126mm to 133mm. When the wheels were built I had the shop check for frame alignment and it was dead on. (Lucky!) Skip Eichert describes how to do this at www.vinatgetrek.com. I saw Sheldon Brown's method using 2x4 as levers but was afraind to try that.

BTW-I had to spread almost to 160mm to get a 133m final result. I just did the same conversion to this 1976 Raleigh Mixte for my wife

[IMG][/IMG]

I bought a used 7 speed nexus 700cc wheel of ebay.

I converted a 1973 Schwinn World Voyageur frame to accept a Nexus 8 speed hub. I am going to use this as my winter commuter as I had 700cc wheels built and got a pair of Nokian 106's for post November riding. Also I hope that this build serves as inspiration for others to try thier own repairs etc. A year ago I knew very little about bike repair. With the help of people on this forum, Sheldon Brown (a man amongst men!!) and the park big blue book of bike repair, I did the entire build myself except for the wheels which my lbs did for me.
