Wind blowing 25-30 mph this morning. The waves on the ferry ride had to be 5 feet high, with the boat yawing to and fro like crazy. When I turned into the wind, I got lashed across the face with a handfull of grit a gust of wind had pick up. It hurt like a sonofab!tch. When I got to work, I saw a little nick on my face from it.

Tribike, Hope your recovery goes well. Now that you can breathe better you should be able to ride longer and/or faster.

Well looked at the computer and found out that I have 6747.8 miles so far this year. I feel a lot stronger then before I went back to bike commuting on Jan 20 this year. Lost about 50 lbs and can out run 85% of the roadies. 12% can keep up with me. 3% I'm still working on

Well, now that winter is here, I consider my ten mile hilly commute extreme for me. I have never been a person that liked to brave the cold, but I have become more capable of handling it as I have been riding in colder weather. as to the wind, I usually say, "oh crap" and deal. I have an upright mtb, so there is no aero. Ill leave about 10 minutes earlier in hopes of beating that. To keep warm, Im using a lot of layers. bib shorts, tights, rain paints, top is underarmor, jersey, fleece gortex windbreak. I have XL fleece lined leather gloves, with thinsulate gloves underneath, and the cycling boots have wool socks, sealskinz, boot followed by windproof booties. This is when the temp is at or below 30f. I dont like cold. Im going to call foxwear on friday and order some serious winter tights and baselayer. I hope I make it.
For xmas Im getting some mx firepalms and probably studded tires. yay!!! I always was bored with xmas, but everyone is happy as I finally have things I want.

Tibike -- I think your armadillos are a little skinny for me since I ride 35s now. Thanks for the thought though.
Adiankur -- I agree with Mars, 10 miles on a mountain bike is no small trip. It does sound like you're on the right track with clothing. Like the rest of us, I'm sure you'll refine the layering system as you ride in more cold weather. The worst is sleet, which really stings your face and exposed skin. In close second is rain when the temps are in the upper 40s through mid 50s. It is really hard to deal with that combination.
The deer on the MUP are so acclimated to humans its like riding through a petting zoo. I'm passing within arms reach of wild deer and they are totally unconcerned. I also saw the shadow of the hunting fox across the canal. There are still a surprising number of riders out even as the temps drop. I guess high gas prices are still having an effect.

Well I rode with my son to school today -- and we didn't forget anything! I do have to get that boy moving faster in the AM or I'll be coming into work at lunchtime before long.
A pleasantly uneventful ride this morning. It was even a little warmer this morning than the past couple of days. Other than wearing lighter gloves and one less layer not much changed. I am so looking forward to a new derailleur since the old one is getting balky. I think this weekend I need to spend some quality time on bike maintenance and cleaning, there are a bunch of little things that seem to need adjustment and cleaning.

It's been uneventful here too Maryland. It gets like that this time of year down here. Till about jan 15. Then back to cagers trying to run me over....
I'm off today so I think I'll ride down to the beach with the kayak in tow. Due a little kayak around the islands. See what up out in the Gulf. See you guys later.

Rain and snow here today. Took my cyclocross bike instead of my recumbent. The wind has moderated somewhat, but it was a wild night! The snow isn't accumulating yet, we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Ooo - windy today - luckily it was a tailwind most of the way home but the crosswind almost blew me over a couple of times. Supposed to be downright cold in the morning - I already got my four days in this week, so if I am facing a bad headwind, I might wimp out.
I found a pair of gloves on the MUP tonight. (Mount Vernon Trail, by the cut off to the 4 mile run trail) Anyone loose a pair?

Wind + ss = buggered Gus.
Luckily i've had a nice tailwind the last three days. Spin class for free.
Cyclo - those two guys that got stabbed and drove to the hospital (smh.com.au) - 2 doors from my place. I rode past the whole thing. Just before it happened evidently

Battled a headwind most of the way home last night and the windshill made it ridiculously cold. This morning it was a serious headwind for the first half of my trip this morning. With temps around 24 and windchills down into the teens it was freakin' cold. I actually stopped at about the half way point to stomp my feet and try and revive my toes. Except for the wind and cold it was actually a beautiful day. I must admit that after last night's cold and wind and plunging into even more of it this morning my wimp system was on overdrive. Even after I started riding part of me kept complaining about sore legs and cold toes even though I know I've ridden in worse.
Its a weekend of bike repair for me. My new derailleur was waiting at the LBS last night when I stopped in for other stuff. So I've got a derailleur to install, new pedals to replace my slowly disintegrating pair and some brake adjustments to make. Oh well it should keep me out of trouble.
CigTech -- did you make the kayak you're towing? If so nice work, it looks like a beautiful little boat.

Single digit temps on my way in. 9F / -13C.
Strong headwind on the final mile of my commute, which is also mostly up-hill. That was about the only part that really sucked, because it was pushing the cold air through most of my clothing.

Maryland, My wimp system won out today. I got up, looked at the windchill(10F), looked at my odometer (120 miles) and figured I had done enough for the week.
Karma got me back though - there was a wire down accross the road so the bus was delayed and I got to work extra late. This is my first real winter in many years, having moved up from Texas and California before that.
I'll be back on on Monday.

I had a BF member stop in the store last night. We talk of a while and he said that his dad had a Denali also. It was slow at the store last night. Man was it cold on the way home too. It got down to 30F last night. I did not have a coat either. So I took the short way home 3.53 miles. I did have long pants and a tee shirt on with a light jacket and fingerless gloves.
