Hey . . . snow!

Four minutes of snow flurries on the way in from Brooklyn. Just enough to make me and all the cyclists on the streets feel sort of . . . giddy?

I have a sunrise-sunset calandar that tells me beginning around Jan 29th, I'll be able to start commuting safely again.

I am looking forward to that.

I saw that snow, but if you blinked you could easily have missed it.

I didn't wish for snow last winter while we did not have any.
Too bad I am not rich. A winter home somewhere warm sounds wonderful.

On the Tuesday night group ride last night, crossing a ped bridge over a freeway I noticed bike tracks in front of me (I was tired and riding nearly DFL.) I immediately thought either sawdust or that the concrete was spalling.

It eventually hit me. Duh! Snow. That's why I put the Nokians back on the bike Monday.

Tim...have you always worked in Newark? Don't you live in Park Slope or nearabouts? Do you actually bike commute to *gulp* New Jersey?

Yep - you're right. I've worked in Newark for about 5 years now.

i've poured over maps forever and just cannot make a full commute from park slope to newark feasible. it would be an all day affair. plus it's all heavy truck traffic so i'd probably just die.

so, i ride from my apartment in brooklyn to the world trade center, lock the bike up, and then hope on the PATH train to get to work. So, it's kinda a half\half commute. the ride only ends up being 5-6 miles each way. but at least i get to ride everyday and avoid taking the subway.

I got snowed on this morning too... then I looked around and the city was setting up snow machines for the winter games day at the Capital this weekend. Yes, here in wisconsin we can't have a winter games day without snow so we manufacture it... bah.

Tim: I'm mighty impressed. And a little jealous. It's like you get to ride and read books.
vr: yeah, a sprinkling of snow that doesn't stick and reminds you of being 8 is a lot different once it starts piling up, people who are mad at the weather start driving like idiots. . . .

That was a great mini blizzard. Work stopped for about 5 minutes as we all gazed out the window. My son told me his class was in the middle of a test and everyone just put their pencils down & pressed their faces to the window to watch in amazement. Winter's here!

A reminder to all who take the Manhattan Bridge. There's that slow leak at the entrance on Canal and Bowery. That's black ice now. Almost slipped on it last night. It was there this morning. Doesn't look as if it's going away anytime soon. Be careful.

Read somewhere that this was the 1st time since the 1800s that Central Park got no snow before New Year's. Amazing.

We had our 2nd snow here on Tuesday afternoon. I was worried about not being seen by the scary southern drivers in the snow, so I hopped on the bus instead...

I'm sitting here with my daughter looking out the window NOT praying for more sonw. We've had about 50cm in the last 10 days. Not Denver like but still alot. I too enjoy riding in the snow but when the roads aren't plowed it's a full pain in the a**.

Do you NYers or CAers prepare for any kind of winter, (tires, gloves, headgear)?
Just wondering

I saw the flurry about an hour after I got to work. I had to go out for a walk but man, I felt bad I wasn't riding when it happened, I would've felt like a little kid all over again.

Oh, yeah, it gets cold. Or at least it used to. New York's a northern city; we regularly had snow. Except last year it snowed only once, and that was 26 inches in 24 hours. There's never enough lasting snow to get studded tires. Too many cars; there's not a road in the city that stays snowy more than a day after it snows.
I was going to make a joke about how we should all be enjoying global warming while we can — those jokes aren't real funny after Katrina.

the only special preperation is additional layers or heavier jackets, booties, leg warmers, etc. once in a while you might need a balaclava but you can do without it.

still, we have the potential to get a lot of snow and sub-freezing temps. it's just been a rare occurance lately.
