I would really be in support of UTC for everything... our Congress really made things miserable for IT by switching the dates.... I also have pondered why the rest of the world (outside IT and the military) doesn't just use a 24 hour time scale... why bother with AM/PM?

Just as I was getting ready to put away the lights for the spring, I had to get them charged up for this morning's ride.

It's a great thing for me, on week days I get an hour and a half of light while the bike kitchen is open.

Interesting. I had thought it would be more "good" than this so far.

Bike kitchen?

I'm indifferent for rec. rides as I don't mind riding in the morning when it's dark, but for commuting it's a bit of a pain. My commute to the trolley station in the morning is 3/4 of a mile or I can skip the trolley and ride to the next trolley/bus stop 3 miles away where I catch the bus. No matter which station I choose, I need to have enough lighting to see and it's a bit of a hassle to carry an expensive headlight that will sit in my panniers most of the day. I don't mind the rear blinkies as I always have two of them on the bike anyways.

I think daylight savings is superfluous for people who live near the equator.

I like the idea of moving my work an hour ahead...gives me more daylight in the evenings to ride or mess around with my son. Seems to me, it would be easier to keep the clocks the same and move business hours ahead 1 hour earlier, but that would never work...moving the clock messes with people heads and thats the point, it forces them to adjust.

from an entirely selfish point of view it works for me. Today it was great to ride home in the full light of day and, had I been able to get of work out a little earlier, I almost had enough time to extend my riding with an 1 1/2 hour road ride.

Whether it makes real practical, political, economic or conservation sense- I'd have to do a lot more research before I dared venture an opinion. I'm sure it has the potential to be very negative for some people and very positive for some people. How that balances out- I have no idea.

I used to like it when it gave me more time to ride and do stuff after work, but lately my schedule has changed such that I'm doing early morning training rides. It was just getting to the point, over the past few weeks, where my morning rides were more light than dark, DST screws that all up .

Yep. It encourages people to go to the mall in the evening. That's more money for retailers. Yes, people do turn out their lights when they leave, which saves some energy, but then they DRIVE to the shop, which uses even more energy, which people have to buy, which makes money for people who give money to politicians.

I initially said "Don't Care", but this morning I realized what the advantage of DST is for me personally. I've always enjoyed the transition from night to day when driving in the past. Now I leave my home pitch dark and get to experience this beautiful transition on my bike. Excellent!

It has a small effect on reducing peak power loads from street lights coming on just as folk are getting home and firing up appilances, so I count it as good.

I tend to think that DST is more trouble than it's worth. That being said, however, I don't really have a strong opinion on the matter.

I think the concept might look good on paper but sucks otherwise. My job hours vary based on available daylight not on some freakin' clock. In fact it is costing my guys more time and money now, because they are stuck in morning rush hour traffic instead of coming in an hour before..
As far as saving energy there are a lot more methods that could be implemented that would make more sense and probably save even more energy, like having people switch to compact fluorescent bulbs, DRIVE THE FRIGGIN' POSTED SPEED LIMITS!! I bet if they could enforce mandatory speed limits on major highways they would save a huge amount of fuel. Chip all big trucks to 65 mph or perhaps even less.

Seems strange to complain about government meddling, then in the next breath advocate new laws.

pffft... as long as you're passing laws, let's just ban the sale of all new clothes dryers. Simple law, easy to enforce and HUGE energy savings - much more than some measly speed-limit enforcement.

That would seem very extreme to most everyone though. We're just not in a place where people are willing to sacrifice anything meaningful.

+1 Just as I'm enjoying riding to work in daylight again, poof! Plunged back into darkness!!

Not good. And all those kids standing at bus stops are in the dark, too. Their parents probably prefer the earlier light...

I was just getting used to having light in the morning! Now I'm back to riding my morning shift in the dark again. Whine, whine, whine.

On the other hand I'm looking forward to starting a rec ride on the tandem at 7pm.
