commuting to work
As a way to kill some time at work I was wondering how far each way as well as how long it takes everyone to get to and from work?

Im slow. 9 miles 45 minutes or 1 hour depending on my mood.the sky that morm(6am) and the skunks:)
|
15 miles. It takes an hour from the time I leave the house until I get to work by taking the bus/trolley. It takes an 1 hr-1hr 15 mins by bus/trolley (or more if I miss the trolley) on the way home and add 10-15 mins to that if I ride home.
Saturdays, public transportation won't get me to work on time so I can drive the 15 miles to work in about 20 minutes or I can ride in using a flatter 12 mile route. I have yet to test ride this route so I'm not sure how long it'll take me, but I'm estimating 1hr-1hr 15 mins. |
my first ride from the new apartment the other day took almost 1.5 hours and is about 10 hilly miles and 8 flat miles away I think. I think I lost my computer in the move, and I didn't have it with me so I won't know for sure until I ride again.

12 miles in about an hour.
|
Mine's about 16.5 miles in 45 minutes on the road bike, on the touring bike it's 1 hour.
|
28 miles each way. 1hr 45 min to 2 hrs. My touring bike is a wee bit on the slow side. Consequently, I plan on purchasing a road bike soon.
I can do the return trip in 90 minutes when I am not fighting the wind. Hills hills hills hills and more hills. |
I'm dual-mode and multi-route. Before the wreck, my usual was this:
3 miles to the north Olathe park & ride bus stop via Bike (12-15 minutes, 10-12MPH) 25 miles or so to the Marriott Hotel via Bus (25 minutes, 60 MPH) About 1 mile to get some coffee before work via Bike (no real average speed, there's a stop in there) ... work ... About 1/2 mile to get to a different bus stop Via Bike (mostly downhill, about 2 minutes, 20-30 MPH depending on traffic and how hard I want to hammer on it) Hellaciously long bus ride with lots of stops on surface roads, drops me off at the college my wife works at. Then it's either straight home (6 miles, 30-35 minutes) or to the coffee shop then back home (10 miles, no good average since I stop, but probably still in 10-15 MPH territory) My shortest commute if I go to the closest bus stops to where I live and work is 6.4 miles daily. |
16 miles, 50 minutes, twice daily. I think that's about 19 miles an hour average.
Hopefully raise my average even more as I lose weight and gain strength. God I love riding fast, it feels so good cruising at around 22mph+ on the flats. |
20 miles each way - A smidge under an hour and a half each way at the moment. The 3 1/2 miles of bumpy dirt shoulder from my house to the edge of civilization really drop my average speed down, and I'm not fast to begin with. :\

For me, it's 7.5 miles each way. Time depends on the bike. On road bike 25-30 minutes. I have to haul ass to average over 17 MPH. On the winter tank, closer to 35-40 minutes. |
10.2 miles each way. average time ranges from 35 mins to 45 mins depending on time of year, how much crap I'm carrying on the bike, studded tires, how tired I am, the wind etc...
|
5 miles each way, takes about 20 minutes-ish, I average 15-18 mph, and have one stop light directly in front of work and I can use a parking lot to circumvent the light.
|
25 miles each way in the summer - anywhere from an hour & 15 minutes to 2 hours, depending upon weather, traffic, luck, wind.
13 miles each way in the winter (drive part way) - about an hour (on the bike) when it's dry, hour and a half if the roads are snowy and icy, longer if I gotta wrassle morons. |
5 miles in 20-25 minutes depending on lights, etc. No pitstops to wrassle morons yet, but I am sure it is coming.
|
Lets see...
There's 4 parts to my commute... Part 1 (house to station): 4.22 miles, uphill, about 25-30 minutes Get on train, ride 35 miles to station near work, 55 minutes. Part 2 (station to work): 1.8 miles, flat with a short hill at the end, about 10 minutes, give or take afew for traffic signals. Part 3 (work to station): same as part 2 Get on train, ride 35 miles to station near home, 55 minutes. Part 4 (station to home): 4.22 miles, downhill, about 15 minutes. |
3.4 miles in about 20-25 minutes
I'm not setting any land speed records anytime soon |
8.9 miles each way - 45 minutes on average - 60 minutes if the wind is blowing or if I'm lollygagging - 35 minutes if I'm running late.
Speaking of which, I've been trying to shave a few minutes off my average time by reminding myself to push - I tend to daydream and just loaf along. |
3.5 miles, 15-20 minutes. There are many traffic lights and a drawbridge to possibly go up.
|
7.5 km - 30 minutes (uphill leg no snow, no head/tailwind)
7.5 km - 45 minutes (5-10 cm of snow) |
15 miles, about 46 minutes with the wheels rolling, about 51 minutes overall. Homeward bound is about two minutes slower.
I'm experimenting with different starting times to see if I can avoid the perpetual 9:00am traffic jam on the bridge over the freeway about a mile from the office. Also, leaving a bit earlier to encounter less traffic will reduce the other red lights en route, for less time standing and less time accelerating, so more energy will be left for cruising faster. |
6 miles, 20-28 minutes, depending on energy level, traffic and lights.
|
22 miles each way - normally 70 minutes to and 81 back. My home is around 600 feets higher than work - gradual climb back home. Three (potential stopping) intersections in that distance. These times are for light winds. Maximum time to get home so far - 155 minutes.
I work 12 hour shifts day/night. Sometimes on the way home I'm a little flat... |
Im on a pretty flat 12km (7.5mile) one way trip to work. Once I get out the door I can get there in about 25 minutes on my mountain bike. But I have some Schwalbe Marathons to make the commute a bit faster.
The big factor for me is wind. With it on my tail the ride can be made in 20 minutes. In front, 35-40 minutes depending on severity. At this distance the biggest factor in the bed to desk travel is the preparation on both ends. getting dressed (bike gear) showers etc... |
6 miles with a mountain in the middle - 3o to 40 minutes depending on the shape I'm in.
|
10km, 25 minutes. All flat, all bike paths :) Got to drop someone today, haven't done that in ages :D
|
9 miles, 45 minutes to an hour depending on the time of day and traffic.
Yesterday it took me an hour and 20 minutes. I left for work at 12:15 PM. The sun was out and it was ~70F (21C). I just took my time and enjoyed the day. I stopped at a park a few blocks from work and enjoyed the warm sunshine and the solitude for about 10-15 minutes. My kind of day. |
12.4 miles - 38-45 minutes
|
