How about Fifth Avenue? Seems like a straight shot. Where in Downtown Brooklyn are you?

Agreed on 5th Ave., then left on Bergen Street, Right on Smith and you'll go through Downtown area eventually hitting ramp for the Manhattan Bridge. That's my route anyway....

Doesn't just about everyone who rides to the city from Brooklyn take that route?

I for one take that route as well.

I actually stay on Sixth Avenue till almost Flatbush; Fifth is a little dicey with the magically vanishing bike lanes.
I leave the house at 9, 9:30. So I never see anybody good. (One esteemed local BF member once offered to help me take the scenic route through Williamsburg. Then he told me when he left for work: 7:30!)

I used to live in sunset park, 8th avenue and 49th street.
I'd go straight up 49th to 5th avenue, then right down 5th avenue all the way to the end, took the wrong way for a block, head straight into whatever the hell that street is under the BQE, around to bedford and into queens.

Oh, yeah. Can you recommend a Vietnamese sandwich shop? Can't find a decent Bánh mě anywhere in Manhattan or northern Bklyn.
Mmmm:

5th is definitely an easy ride. If there's any traffic, it's usually not moving so you can cruise.

In my Sunset Park days when I had to go into the city (and thus, through Downtown Brooklyn), I took Fourth Ave. from 40th all the way to Atlantic & Flatbush, then up Flatbush to the bridges (some of my time there was in the halcyon era before the Manhattan Bridge was open to bikes). The cars on Fourth move a little closer to highway speeds than on Fifth, but there are fewer opening doors and fewer pedestrians.

5th avenue is indeed a bit rough, but i still take it anyway. I need my daily shot of bicycle porn at r and a. Sometimes just a quick ganger in the window, others a full stop and shop experience is necessary. Heck, it's the only thing that gets me through the day!

I've almost been doored right on that block. Speaking of R&A, my wife picked up a tryke for our 3 year old there a few days ago. Yes they have amazing stock and a lot of knowledge, but I feel like unless your a 200 mile per week stud roadie, your not worth talking to. It kind of sucks. Not to mention the grips rotted off the same day (window model sun exposure) and the front wheel fell of while he was riding. Sorry for the off topic rant, but they have a lot of balls sending home a kid with a bike in that shape.

jrubz: You nailed it on R&A. I have found them to be, in general, total dicks. They were even like that to my buddy who (through a crazy moment of inspiration) decided to buy a $5,000 Cervelo to ride a stage of the Tour de France. (He'll write it off as an expense of the book he'll write about the crazy moment of inspiration, etc.) Anyway, he's there, dropping however many thousands of dollars on the bike (plus pedals, new Sidis, full kit, whatnot) — and they're still dicks to him! (Although the main mechanic, whom everybody loves, seems to be cool). Don't even get me started on the egg-shaped guy who looks like Kevin Pollack.

I always bought my kids' stuff at Dixon's, which is a little flaky on the wrench side, but just great people.
Apologies for the rant. And I've almost been doored on that block, too.
