Fun! thanks.
I spent 2 weeks in Paris last year, served to convince me I AIN'T a city boy. But it was sure fun!
We saw several families (hubby, wife, 2-3 kids) out riding those 24/7 busy streets, they'd just take a lane and cruise along, drivers took it in stride and didn't run over the 5-yr old on the kiddie bike trailing behind... Amazing.

Awsome! I have always wanted to live and bike in Paris. People used to say, you're crazy, but now biking has made a come back in the french capital. Fortunately I live in a more bike friendly area, but it doesn't have the excitement that I am looking for. At least I get to go to paris for the weekends. It is a two hour train ride grome where I am.
Love the pictures, you have some nice classic bikes in there... some Gitane, Motobecane I think, and the classic work of 'not' art from Marcel Duchamps.

The photos seem to show that the most popular type of bike is one that is rarely seen in the US. A one speed/3 speed with upright bars, fenders, chainguard and rack. A very robust utilitarian bike.
Why aren't there more bikes like that here?

Entertainigly, the one and only accident we saw in 2 solid weeks on the streets of Paris was a drunk guy on a nice-looking utilitarian bike run into a parked car. A whole line of parked cars, actually. It was a lo-speed crash, maybe 7-8mph, he bounced off one car, into the second, then lay in the street for a bit, staggered back up and limped off pushing the bike in a wiggly line. VERY inebriated.
It was funny. I wonder if he's on BF

im doing half my phd in paris and took over my roadie during one of my stays - had a ball riding along the bus lanes in the city. good fun!
i'll admit that there are a lot of crappy "plastic" mtbs there but then there are also a lot of old ladies on bikes which are equally as old taking the shopping home etc.
i felt surprisingly safe out on the streets, even on the massive roundabouts and the drivers, if anything, gave me too much room in general.

Did you notice the guy in the 4th picture (pink bike)? I think the shoes he is wearing are road bike shoes, for some reason I wouldn't have thought of those shoes as going with that bike.
Always nice to see pics of Paris.
