So, after many excuses and set-backs (real and imagined) I finally rode to work.
Just under 7 miles one way. There are a few hills and I took it pretty easy, but still got here faster than I thought - about 34 minutes. I stopped once, basically just to gaze at the lake I was riding past and reflect on how much nicer this is than being in my car on a crowded avenue (posted a shot in the commuter pics thread).
The morning was nice and cool, got here sweaty and panting but not too bad.
I feel great; wish I had done this a long time ago.

I've had almost the exact same experience. (Right down to the distance, hilliness, time it takes me, and stopping by a body of water to appreciate the tranquility!)
I remember buying my first car at age 21, and saying to myself, "I hope I don't become one of those people who drives somewhere every day." 14 years later, I'm reminding myself of that daily as I go through a long-overdue rehab for car dependency.

Catching my breath; I just got home from the second leg of my commute.
I forgot to check the time but I think I got home even faster (but with more huffing and puffing).
I learned a few of things:
- a nice cold after-work beer is even more satisfying than usual
- I need to upgrade my 70's era shifting mechanisms
- I should invest in some non-cotton shirts

Congrats and keep it up! Now that you have your first commute in you will want to do it every day. At least that is how I feel, there are still a day or two a week I need to take my car. (I know, I know, no tomatoes please
) On the days I drive the car I am saddened by not having the bike, if I could only figure a way to get the car home while I ride home
.
Again congrats!

Good Work! It will get easier with time, but it is always exilerating. You may notice a feeling of being trapped whenever you have to drive or use public transport. Although, with some planning and the right clothing, you shouldn't need to feel trapped too often. I envy your lake view.
