Discuss the commute distance in my input thread.
Post any graphs, statistics, etc here.
|
Is this reporting for round-trip, or one way???
|
Round trip
|
How do you want a multimodal commute to be entered? I have a 24 mile one-way trip - 5 by car, 3 by bike and 16 by boat....
|
Miles spent on bike. The number I'm looking for is how much do you pedal to get back and forth to work.
|
Slightly under 20 miles round trip for me. It's fairly hilly though so I round it up to 20. :D
I've been doing it 3-4 days a week for a few months now. Prior to that I was only riding in 1-2 days a week. |
25 miles round-trip, half city and half country. When the days get too short I often do 2/3rds of the AM ride by bus as the morning route involves a narrow, twisting, unlit road.
|
Here is my daily commute:
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path...ington-Commute It's about 40-miles, round trip. |
So far, I have an average of about 16.9 miles round trip.
|
Whatcha gonna do if two people are entering their data simultaneously? Both will start with the same "previous" total.

However, I just noticed that three of us managed to post simultaneously recently, so pieholden's post need fixing. |

Made my route here! 8.6 I guess it is, but two big hills and never very flat. Always seem to be going slightly up or down if no hill and I have to go into and out of the river valley twice. |
just entered mine - it's just about 16 right now... not bad - of course you have outliers like Chipcom who will bring up the average (mean).
|
One other thing to keep in mind is that you have people commenting in the other thread outside of just posting their commute distance. You will need to subtract out those posts from the thread total to get an accurate average.
I know, I know...it's the engineer in me. |
why so terse?
|
We've already had some math errors crop up in the data collection thread. Unfortunately, trying to provide a running total with each post doesn't seem to be working. I put the data into a spreadsheet and the stats including post 78:
73 riders 1498 total miles (round trip) Maximum: 56 Average: 20.81 Median: 19.5 Mode: 21 Minimum: 4 I'll work on maintaining the spreadsheet for a few days, maybe a week so we can get some good statistics. Maybe that college course I took in biostatistics is useful after all. :) Definitions for those who are interested: Average = arithmetic mean. Median = The median is the number in the middle of a set of numbers; that is, half the numbers have values that are greater than the median, and half have values that are less. Mode = The most frequently occurring, or repetitive, value in an array or range of data. |
I assumed you wanted all values properly rounded up?
I tried to post the g-map, but ??? the actual map doesn't come up. Any way, it's about 1/3 level, 1/3 straight down (or up) hill, then another 1/3 level. Of course, it's uphill on the way home. :) |
Hopefully someone recalculates everything. At one point the distance dropped from 14xx to 129x. So at the moment the result misses over 100 miles. (Excel someone?)
Teme |
Excel here...
Including post # 117, based on spreadsheet data: Correct total miles: 2120 Riders: 109 Maximum: 56 Average: 19.63 Median: 16.5 Mode: 12 Minimum: 4 So far the graph isn't showing a trend. However, statistically, the median and mode are dropping as more data come in. |
This is a great idea.
How about: - average speed of commute - average weight of gear (everything that comes off the bike at each end of the commute) - average weight of bicycle |
Whenever you guys want to finalize the data, just send me a PM, and I can close the thread to new posts.
|
Though not the OP, I'd say give it a week or 500 posts, whichever comes first. That would provide a good dataset. After a day we have 125 datapoints which should give us 500 in a few days. But I'll defer the decision to the OP. I'm just the OCP. :D
I have the data in an Excel spreadsheet and an Access database to crunch numbers. It looks like I can't post spreadsheet or database files, but I can post zips. I'll zip the files and post them at 250 and 500. |
37.6 miles round trip.
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path...y-commute57677 Cobb parkway is actually pretty chill, due to a wide bike lane down most of it. Howell Mill is nice too, very treey (word?). Not very hilly, although it can be a drag with a full "Monday load". Very nice ride, a vast contrast from my previous "commute of death". |

Statistics as of post number 158
Total Miles: 2827 (round trip) Riders: 147 Maximum: 56 miles Average: 19.23 miles Median: 16 miles Mode: 12 miles Minimum: 2 miles Attached is a PDF with crunched data http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...5&d=1185140774 |

With the Hefty Huffy:
Bike: 38 lbs. Gear:12 lbs. Average speed: 8 mph (10 min. downhill, 20 min. uphill) With the Fleet Fuji: Bike: 28 lbs. Gear: 12 lbs. Average speed: 12 mph (7 min. down, 15 min. up) Fuji has steel rims. Huffy has alloy rims. I live in the rainy PNW. Huffy can actually stop in the rain. Guess what I ride more? But my legs are HUGE :D |
