Why no radio/audio device for bottle cage?
I've found playing a radio to be most effective for warning walkers on the bike path or MUP. I like riding with tunes as well and I don't really want to have headphone on for obvious reasons. I've been searching the net for bicycle types of radios or speaker systems for MP3 devices and don’t like any of them. They all seam to require mounting the radio or speaker system to the handlebar. I don't like that at all. What I want is an AM/FM radio and jack allowing an MP3 or similar audio device to be plugged in as well that fits a standard bottle cage. I want it to have at least one speaker so no headphones are required. All you do is stick it in the bottle cage and you have a noise maker ready to go and take with you without needing to leave part of it behind in the form of mounting clamps and other such special mounting devices. I know simple transistor radios with an amplifier for improved audio can be built so small that the "radio bottle" could still hold a supply of water in addition to the radio and speaker. I just wonder if no one has thought of it yet? I know I would purchase one if they were available.

Riding or driving with headphones is illegal in Rhode Island. And I might add dangerous.

Meh, if I were walking/running/riding down a MUP, the last thing I'd want would be some dingdong playing REO Speedwagon on a tinny little radio and disturbing the peace.

We're legally allowed to ride with one earphone here. I listen to audiobooks while I ride so I figure it's no different than having a conversation with someone only safer. My volume levels are faily low, my ear buds get over powered by older cars and busses.

I don't have a free water bottle cage anyway; I only have two, and in the summer, they're both full of bottles, and the rest of the year, one has a battery.
I'd rather use a single earbud anyway. Honestly, it does NOT affect ability to ride in traffic in the least. I can hear cars coming at least 15-20 seconds before they get to me, I can hear birds, I can hear animals scurrying around in the ditches when I scare them, all while listening to audiobooks or radio on one earbud.
I agree with whatsmyname; I wouldn't want to have to listen to somebody else's stuff on some crappy little 2 inch speaker anyway.

while I made my own mini-speaker set up THIS is a great way to have tunes on a bike.........
the safe way. (P.S. I use a small shower cap or disposable bowl cover to keep rain out of mine)

I use a SkullCandy bag. Amazing bag with tunes right by the lower ears. I turn it upp for the news and traffic reports and ride. Walkers tend to look behind when they heard that on. If not then I give them the bell.
Love the shoulder controls.!
EDIT: Gah.. wrong linkage before. SORRY!!

Ask and ye shall receive.
that is slick...but I don't have an Ipod I have never listened to the radio or music that much while commuting, even by car. My hearing is bad enough as it is that I don't need the additional distraction. But I can see how it would appeal to some.

I'd say make what you want. Get a cheap polyethylene water bottle and a glue gun. I'd mod the cap to hold a small, round speaker that connects to a headphone jack. Cheap, small radios can be found that are much smaller than a bottle. I'd just melt a hole in the bottle (maybe with the tip of a glue gun?) about the size of the radio - so you can mount the thing so you can get at the controls. Then just wedge the thing in the new hole and glue it in tightly, and you're good to go.
I'd be surprised if you couldn't make what you want for under $20.

This is a really weird illustration.
Besides the iPod speaker gizmo being way out of scale to the bike, there's a disc brake rotor where the chainring should be, and what are those things mounted on the chainstay and seatstay?
Why did the 'artist' put brake levers on a track bike?
I like it when people who don't know what bikes look like design stuff for bikes.

When I was still using water bottle cages, I remember getting bottles ejected from them fairly regularly--even when riding only on pavement.

I'm all for inovation and comfort while riding, but if you are trying to warn peds that you are coming, have you considered a bell?

I have a bell. A large and loud Ding-Dong bell. If I ring it all that happens is the ped on the right will go left and the ped on the left will go right, then decide they should not have done that and cross sides again bumping into each other in the middle of the path. Squirrels are more predicable! Having the radio playing allows the peds to hear you coming and respond in a more predictable way. They look for the radio noise and then move to the right and watch you go by in almost every case.
