Please explain buying from the UK and Vat charges...

Checking on the possibility of purchasing the frame only Thorn Raven Sport directly from SJS Cycles. Put my Atlanta address in selected the frame I wanted and placed in cart and proceeded to the check-out to get a total. It gave me this:

****Sub Total: £699.99
****Delivery: £75.00
VAT Deducted £104.25
**Grand Total £670.74 = US Dollars = $1337.32

The part I am concerned about the the VAT deduction. What does that mean?

Also, will there be extra charges in shipping from UK to Atlanta, GA?

UK prices normally include VAT (value added tax) If it is going abroad it should not be taxed and so, the "VAT Deducted"

As for shipping, this from their website
"All Export deliveries
All orders dispatched to addresses outside the UK mainland will attract a delivery charge.
This website will calculate the actual cost of delivery after you have added the items you would like to purchase to your shopping basket, registered as a customer and submitted a delivery address."

So, if you put in your address, it would seem that 75 pounds is the shipping cost. (normal shipping in the UK is 35.) Would check that though, 75 seems a bit low.

Edit: Not sure I was looking at the same website, I went to the first result from google.

that site is presumably aimed at UK consumers. unlike in the US, prices in the UK (and most other places) include the sales tax, so that what you see is what you actually pay. however, when goods are exported, you don't have to pay UK VAT, so they've deducted it from the price.

having said all that, you will still be liable for US duties/taxes for import (if there are any).

I would assume that $150 includes delivery to the US - it can't possibly be the domestic shipping price, seeing as you can move a frame from one end of the UK to the other for $20 by DHL. In fact, $150 shipping from the UK to the US is a scandalous amount imvho.

VAT is basically sales tax, and as you don't live in the EU, you don't need to pay it. In the EU VAT (or sales tax) is factored into the price advertised, not added in at checkout like in the States.

So, if you go to an LBS in London for a tube it'll be marked £3.50, and you pay exactly £3.50 because tax is already factored in. If you go to an LBS in the States the tube will be marked $3.50 and you'll pay $3.77 (or whatever) because the tax is factored in at checkout.

One thing you will have to pay is customs and duty charges on the value of the frame when it enters the States.

As for the shipping charges, only the shipper can tell you about them.

Not that particular frame. Other than custom frames they don't sell Rolhoff ready frames in the US. Our market over here is primarily cookie cutter MTB or Lance wannabe's road bikes. I have been ordering commuter bits and vintage Raleigh type stuff from overseas for years. Cannondale is a good example of this. They sell some very nice touring and commuting bikes that are not available on the US market...even though they are a US company.
