I joined the club
That is the "I've been hit by a car" club. I'm not going to go into detail. The circumstances are still fuzzy, and I walked away with only a scrape on my elbow and a gash on my hand. My bike is fine. I was riding the track bike. The front wheel will need to be trued and the bars were bent a little bit.
Essentially, this was an area of poor visibility. I was checking traffic over my shoulder while the driver was backing out. I had both lights going, and I think he backed out a bit too fast, but I could have avoided it had I not been checking traffic behind me. I saw him at the last second, tried to swerve, and took out one of his tail lights. He immediately stopped and made sure I was okay. I asked about his car, and he told me not to worry about it. My hand was bleeding, so the store we were in front of made me sit down and gave me gauze and bandages. This was something that could have happened at any time at this location, but I'm not really badly hurt. I was just a little agitated after the whole incident; not mad at the driver, just mad that I was in a wreck in the first place.

I've had several close calls just like yours in the last week alone. That's why I'm experimenting with a mirror for checking traffic behind. It actually works better in the am when it's dark 'cause the cars have their headlights on. Allows me to stay focused forward....... Glad you were not seriously hurt.

I know a lot of cyclists frown on mirrors, but they can really help avoid situations like this. I always use a mirror, and will usually check over the shoulder as well, but sometimes you don't have time for both.
