I used to do it with mine when I rode to school. It was a short ride (~5 min) and saved me the hassle of getting into my mess bag when I got to the lot.

Not openly, but I'm not just hanging stuff all over it for no good reason. Like I said, you store your lock on your bike, I store it in my pocket (10% of the time anyway). What, exactly, is the difference?

Yup, a good U-lock can be quite heavy. My bulldog lock was mounted on the top tube and came apart while riding in traffic. The lock fell into my empty water bottle cage and decided to grind with the front derailleur and cogs.

After I determined the lock mount was held together with a single bolt that worked itself loose, the lock now goes in my bag.
