Is it actually for sale though?

Even the standard 9-speed i-Motion is difficult to buy right now.

I think if SRAM produces a carbon i-Motion for a road bike, it should produce road shifters for it.

Available or not, I'm just wondering if the Alfine shifter would work with the Nexus Hub. I would imagine it will because from what I've read the internals of the two hubs are identical.

That's what I have on my Nexus 8R25. The website even says Inter-8 compatible.

Plus shipping across the pond. Ad you've still got to deal with how to actually mount it, getting the shifter worked around the bend an up onto the flat would be a *****.

I've used the hub-bub. Admittedly it ain't cheap, but I thought it was quite a neat solution.

I believe the bars are two piece and the shifter would slide straight on from the clamp area. Yep, they aren't cheap. Hub-Bubs work great but I'm not a fan of any type of barend shifter. No offense its just my personal taste. Glad that they work well for you.

I bought an alfine trigger shifter to use with my Nexus inter8, and it works beautifully. I could not imagine using anything else with the Nexus hub. If you read the mtbr forums, you will notice that there are a number of people who believe it performs much better than the revo twist shifter.

Anyway you could post a picture of your shifter? Would love to see the bottom side and how it clamps around the bar. It might be easier to modify to work on road bars than the twist shifter.

I'll try and get a picture sometime this week. I actually just sold the bike to a good friend of mine in order to fund a long haul trucker build. Fortunately since he is a close friend, I can still get a picture and a ride.

BTW - According to Shimano's own information, the Nexus 8 and Alfine are NOT internally identical. They have the same ratios and use the same shifters, but the Alfine uses some additional needle bearings.

Thanks Donkey Hodie.

The red band nexus has better bearings than the standard nexus. I wonder if the alfine has even better bearings than the red band?

Ok, I made an adaptor for my nexus shifter with a scrap bin kalloy mtb bar and a $1.39 hose clamp that is almost invisible and does not impinge on the grip area at all, as it is tucked under the gear indicator tab. its bomber and works great. i think $55 for a hubbub is uh.... I have the nexus on a rob roy, which i was gonna call the IROcho, but have instead decided on "IR8"

That's what I just said. I'd url you to the Shimano web pages with their press releases, exploded parts diagrams with component part numbers, and interchange charts, but you probably wouldn't believe that either.

SJS Cycles has an accessory bar that mounts under your stem. You can put the nexus shifter on it without any adapters and it would also let you mount a light or something else down lower.

dobber - I DIG that bike. Very much like what I want to build. Just need the hub.

I read this mtbr thread (http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=203634) and have been wanting a red band hub ever since.
The consensus was the same as what many are saying on this thread: hub is great, shifter situation sucks.

On that mtbr thread guys report the hub performing and holding up to hard trail riding and brutal hammering.

Hopefully availability of reasonably priced trigger shifters will come soon.

Chasseur 11-01-07 01:14 PM

I'll post a picture when I get a chance. I was expecting the shifter to work like crap after all the dissing, but it's not too bad for road/commuting, at least in the week I've been using it. The action on it is very light, and while it seems imprecise, in use it has been fine. Definitely room to improve.

The hub is just fantastic for this use. I've had one single "clunk." The gearing step between 5 and 6 seems kinda big.

pluc 11-01-07 03:02 PM

I think the Alfine shifter would work well vertically mounted on drops.

I really have no idea why you would think that. Couldn't be farther from the truth. Not trying to rag on you but you should reread your eariler post and you will see that you compared nexus and alfine, not a redband nexus and alfine and that is why I asked my question.

I agree with the idea of getting a pool together to get a drop bar shifter made, but if Sheldon made one, I'm worried it might have a big brass eagle on the side, packing tape to keep the water out and only work with a big red beard :)
