29er's and bus racks

A guy told me yesterday he could not get his 29er wheels with big fat slicks in the bike holders on the front of the bus. ********** They are just 700c wheels with big tires. **********?
He walked his bike 6.5 miles because of a flat, no spare tube or patches.

There is a guy on one of the bus routes I ride that has several konas. One is a 29er. He is usually pounding the wheels down into the bike carrier but he gets them in eventually.

That has me wondering if my 26X2.1 tires will fit. Anyone?
I think they should but I would rather not get stuck.

This is an issue with some car-top carriers and 29ers as well.

I suspect he could have gotten the bike in by removing the air from the second tire -- obviously not practical for the daily commute.

I got mine in there, but I didn't think it was all that secure and it made me too nervous to try it again. Bus driver was no help at all.

I have no problem with 700x35s. How wide are these tires?

It's not really considered 29'er territory until you get as wide as 700x50ish or 700x47.

They also tend to look fairly deep. Meaning that they seem to have a large sidewall.

We have practice racks at two of our downtown stations. I think I will measure the width sometime soon.
I am guessing that I will have issues with my 26X2.1.
I think the 2.1 is the width. 700X50 is roughly 2 inches wide? If they do not fit mine definitely won't fit.

I want to keep my wide tires. Instead I think I will change my route if this is the case.

I can get my 26x1.9s in just fine. The 2.1s aren't that much bigger.

26x2.1 fits fine on the bike racks we use on KC buses. My metric math sucks but I'm pretty sure that's gotta be 55mm or something. I know the hook of the rack goes several inches beyond what's needed for my 700c wheels, so I can't see not being able to hook it being a problem.

Thanks

Now if wide 26" tires and wide 29er tires have roughly the same width, what is the issue? Perhaps the depth of the tire?

I need to try my 29er here in Houston. I'm running 2.35 Schwalbe Big Apples on Halo Freedom Discs. I *****ed about us not getting our bike racks here when we got our light rail, but I think I'd rather just ride my bike.
