Bicycle Comics - Yehuda Moon and the Kickstand Cyclery

Hi,

I waited until I finished thirty strips to post this thread, to make sure I had enough ideas and energy to follow through... though you might have seen a few samples thrown in on different posts.

I would like to hear what you think about a comic strip I've started called 'Yehuda Moon and the Kickstand Cyclery'. It's about bicycles, bicycle commuting, and bicycle advocacy.

Yehuda Moon runs the Kickstand Cyclery with his friend Joe. Yehuda rides either a Coventry randonneur or a Van Sweringen city bike. Joe rides a Rapid Red Line, though still has a fondness for the Blue and Green Lines.

The strip is daily. I try and post each evening. Here's the first strip:

Looking forward to hearing what you think. I'm always looking for suggestions or ideas to make it better.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

Rick Smith

Pretty spiffy!

I shall add it to my RSS reader. I like the one from the 31 Jan. I get no snow here, but it's still funny.

Almost forgot: I love the artwork, too.

ajmstilt 02-22-08 05:21 PM

been reading this for a few weeks now. Keep it up, they've been mostly great so far.

...and it's prolly because i'm dense, but i don't feel like i know any of the characters names yet.

rick,
looks great - i read em all. they're not laugh-out-loud funny, but it is really cool to read something with such close connections to the "world" we live in! i say, keep writing!!!

I like the strip a lot. So much so that I've linked to it.

My suggestions are with the coding and presentation. I'd like to be able to link to a particular day's strip. As the site is presently coded with that javascript slideshow thingie, I can't. My other choices are to hotlink to your images, which I won't do as a matter of principle, or rip off your images and host them myself, which I also won't do because it's copyright infringement.

Thus, other than a generic link buried in the sidebar, I can't share your strips with my readers.

Thanks all!

My suggestions are with the coding and presentation.
Working on this now - it'll be PHP/MySQL driven shortly...

I think I'll keep the link in my favorites as well. So far quite entertaining. Bike ninja was pretty funny.

Yes, the site's back online -

I was updating the web site based on tsl's comments. Now you can link directly to a particular comic strip.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Very nice.
I've always had trouble with the comic strip format-- far too limiting in visual terms for me. And the joke a day format is so damn limiting in narrative terms. Ah, for the days of the extended narrative strip. You're working well within what I consider a formal striaghtjacket.
Your line has a nice clarity; reminds me a bit of Seth; although your figures don't have his grace (sorry; although I find his work stilted, he does draw the figure quite well. On the other hand, your drawing lacks that very stilted quality. Overall, I might like it more). But you've achieved a nice, brushy line that gives some hint of weight and movement.

Humor is such an individual and random thing. I didn't find most of them funny, but the ones I did I laughed out loud so hard I scared my wife.
Carry on. And good luck!

coldfeet 02-24-08 08:26 PM

Loved them all so far, curious to see where you are going with the "Ghost Bike" thing though.
I shall continue to read.

I guess there has to be a naysayer everywhere, but I found a couple of them slightly amusing at best. And those were the good ones.

I am guessing that a lot of them are probably connected to inside jokes from the various forums (I recognize some of the scenarios) but the only humor would be for those who can flash back to the threads that make the comment funny. In and of themselves, I think that few outside of the forum regulars would find many of them funny, or even understand the points.

Of course, I am tired, and I have a history of missing humor when I am tired. I also find that humor with an underlying agenda is rarely humorous to me, and it seems that some of your work falls in that category as well.

I do like the concept, I just think that other than forum regulars, you won't get much of an audience unless you generalize the humor... and I think this is hard to do in a 3 panel cartoon.

I would like to see where this evolves, so I will probably be checking in... I also know that your target isn't everyone, and since several others here like your work, there is something there worth pursuing.

Also, the art work is at least as good as what I see in the newspaper. And I will leave you on this positive note because I do think your work could become something I would enjoy.

Thanks for sharing, and Good luck!

I wonder if Momentum Magazine could use a comic... :)

knucklesandwich 02-24-08 11:14 PM

Rick- great stuff. I have bookmarked as well.

I am a bit of a different type of comic creator myself, dealing mainly with the Yankees, and baseball in general.

Not to hijack, but here's a link.

Take care.
