Love it!:)

Excellent comic. I especially like all the Cleveland winter strips. Shaker Hts, Shaker Lakes, and Univ. Circle area used to be my stomping grounds.

I've located the Kickstand Cyclery in Shaker Heights between the rapid tracks somewhere on Shaker Boulevard in a building reminiscent of the Coventry rapid stop building:

Wonderful strip. I've been to Cleveland, and Yehuda reminds me of someone I met at the Ohio City Bicycle Co-op.

So you can hit Arabica for coffee in the morning, and Captain Tony's for pizza on the way home! (It's been a long long time. Is Captain Tony's still around?)

Rick Smith 02-25-08 11:25 AM

Sadly, it's just a stop in and pick up spot. I remember it as a nice, homey sit-down restaurant.

I am guessing that a lot of them are probably connected to inside jokes from the various forums (I recognize some of the scenarios) but the only humor would be for those who can flash back to the threads that make the comment funny. In and of themselves, I think that few outside of the forum regulars would find many of them funny, or even understand the points.

Of course, I am tired, and I have a history of missing humor when I am tired. I also find that humor with an underlying agenda is rarely humorous to me, and it seems that some of your work falls in that category as well.

I do like the concept, I just think that other than forum regulars, you won't get much of an audience unless you generalize the humor... and I think this is hard to do in a 3 panel cartoon.

I would like to see where this evolves, so I will probably be checking in... I also know that your target isn't everyone, and since several others here like your work, there is something there worth pursuing.

Also, the art work is at least as good as what I see in the newspaper. And I will leave you on this positive note because I do think your work could become something I would enjoy.

Thanks for sharing, and Good luck!

I wouldn't say they are connected to the forums as such, more connected to the biking world in general.
The characters are the ones you come across in the bicycling world. Yes,they are "in jokes" but anyone whose has been living in the bicycling culture for a while will get most of it. Quite a few will probably recognize themselves at some point!

jyossarian 02-25-08 11:59 AM

Nice. I'm waiting for you to introduce recurring customers like "lights guy", "VC guy", and "non-buying customer who wants to talk bikes all the time" guy.

Rick Smith 02-25-08 12:03 PM

Yeah... "Lights Guy" blinds Yehuda shortly (like in ten days) and "All Talk, No Buy" shows up in three weeks.

Also look for the "Bike Whisperer" and "Spin Cycle" (breaks cranks on his fixie regularly).

What a sordid lot we are... :)

Fun strip ideas:

While in bike shop, overhear someone talk about going to the fitness club, and you say that this bike will be a great way to get there. They say that's ridiculous! (an actual conversation I had with my wife today)

Have a carload of cute teenaged girls drive up next to you while you're biking, and say, "nice wheels." They giggle and drive off. While doing so, you give a sincere thanks, with a prideful look, but then are quickly embarrased when you realize they were mocking you (you weren't in a car).

Have an old guy come in the shop and buy some part for his '72 Schwinn. You snicker to a colleague about his heavy, beast of a bike. Later, you ride home and the old man passes you convincingly.

A roadie drives up but has his bike on a rack on his car, even though he's lycra'd up. You find out he lives close by, but he never bikes to the shop. The guy only bikes the MUP or the road by the MUP, which is also close by, and only gets there by driving.

That's how I remember it, too. But that was when I was working at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, which I've been told is also gone.

As for characters, how about "money can't buy talent" guy?
I passed a few of them out on Chilly Hilly yesterday, in full team kit, taking their expensive carbon and unobtaniun racing machines out for a walk up the hills on Bainbridge Island.

Although I'm not sure how to view it via the Wimic comic-reading widget on Dashboard on my Mac, Safari's web clip function works well enough to view the current strip.

Good job; I like it.

Heh -- I already did! He was the "buys everything with his saved gas money" guy, the one with a mirror on his helmet and who had ordered the new wheelset.

:D

AWESOME

please don't stop. They're great!

Forget the giggling girls. Make a strip where the richguy's wife in the convertable makes a suggestive flirtatious comment about your fitness/legs.

God I love rich ladies in convertables

Hills on Bainbridge? My parents live in Winslow...can't say I remember that being very hilly...or is that the point?!

Anyways, I love the comic, keep 'em comin'!

Intheloonybin 02-26-08 12:12 PM

I loved all of them.

I will be following it every day.

Keep up the great work!

tate65 02-26-08 01:03 PM

Noce now I gotta add you to my list Frazz and you.

JohnBrooking 02-26-08 01:23 PM

The snowman one just went up on my cubicle outside wall. My co-worker said the guy looks just like me!

deanp 02-26-08 01:54 PM

God stuff, keep it up!

redneckwes 02-26-08 02:23 PM

Love the strip. You could add the "Got any vintage parts in the basement guy" :D

jyossarian 02-26-08 02:40 PM

Don't forget, "Why are your bikes more expensive than Walmart's?" guy.

Crotach 02-26-08 04:33 PM

I so love the fact I came across these. The artwork is terrific and as someone who has spent the last several months struggling through snow these strips really resonate. It's good to have a laugh as I drip melting ice on my office floor. I also loved the one with the guy buying a bike to display on the back of his car. I know a few people like that in my town. Keep it up.

bikebuddha 02-27-08 07:17 AM

I've just got to say that today's strip is priceless.

Love the one about the 40 year olds :D RSSed in my Google Reader...

beingtxstate 02-27-08 09:49 AM

Rick, I have you in Google reader, but for some reason your new threads always show up as 'read' already. I have tried removing and readding you, but I get the same result. Do you know if everything is hunky dory on your end of the RRS servlet?

I love the strip btw, and look forward to reading it for a long time!
