Looks nice, I may try that.

I converted my 2007 Raleigh to the Sturmey Archer 3 speed SRF3 hub (their new version) at the time of purchase in November 2007. I just paid $470 for the bike on sale plus $230 for SA hub/better wheels upgrade (Sunrims CR18/105 front wheel hub/DT Swiss spokes). The Brooks saddle to top it off and here is the modern recreation of the classic Raleigh Clubman:
http://retroraleighs.com/clubman-kohler.html The SA hub is very small & most people think the bike is a fixie. It also adds only about 2lb to the weight of the bike unlike Shimano 8 speed which is 4lb and quite large. SA is also less expensive and easier to service. I also figured that I do not need more than 3 speeds in New York. I am VERY happy with the setup. I also have Bianchi Volpe which is basically a 27 speed version of this Raleigh and Surly Pacer with Ultegra/Campagnolo Proton wheels. This Raleigh is used almost exclusively this winter. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3124/...4aeaab.jpg?v=0 |
I've been pretty happy with using a three speed for a good part of the winter here... despite a ton of snow, slush, and sand the hub just keeps ticking along happily.

circa '80 Sears Free Spirit (made in Austria)
Fenders, head and rear fender badge, and three-speed stuff from '54 Dunelt Sun CR18 700 rims, 32h ft, 40h rr., Brooks B66 brown saddle. older Shimano Deore XT crank. I painted the frame and fenders with epoxy, the color is called Polynesian Sand (its beige with just a suggestion of pink). 54 year old hub keeps slipping out of third gear - gotta fix that but I hate to keep tearing my bikes apart! http://www.cyclofiend.com/working/im...hpS44qayPM.jpg |
Here's another one:
'88 Schwinn LeTour converted to three speed and Sun CR18 650B rims. Fenders and S-A grip shifter from '67 C-Itoh painted to match frame. Brooks B15 saddle. Tires have since been replaced with used Panaracer Col De La Vie tires. Brakes are early Aultenburger dual-pivot. Unfortunately the front tire needs to be replaced since the sidewalls are ripped in one spot and developed a "snake" in it., Rear tire is flat (sigh):(. Stupid rims were made slightly too big and the tires are almost impossible to get on and off.:rolleyes: http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/images3...hpppk20zPM.jpg |

This thread is really making me wish I could convert my 520 to an internal hub, but I would have to add on a tensioner. Great bikes guys.

My city/ folding travel bike. Built on a Montague frame with a Sturmey Archer 8speed. |

Here's my Raleigh Superbe 4 speed, with a Sturmey Archer FG hub, for slightly greater gear spread, and slightly smaller jumps between the gears. The generator works, but the lights aren't enough on their own. I recently put Schwalbe Marathons and a good rack on this, and now I use it more than any other bike, for everything but speed applications.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...2/P7050003.jpg Here's my standard Raleigh 20, stolen on Christmas night. I ran it standard for a year, and was just preparing to mod it with a Nexus 7 hub in deep section rims, Schwalbe Big Apple tyres, repaint in matt black, cotterless cranks etc. I've now got a single speed 20 in good condition ready for that treatment. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...2/P6040010.jpg Hidden under all that touring kit is our cheap old steel 3 speed tandem, which does sterling service on the school run, camping trips, and pleasure rides. This is also due for hot-rodding with a better hub, stronger wheels, and Brooks saddles. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...2/P8170007.jpg Moulton Mini 3 speed, with the carrier broken off. This is getting the speed treatment - either a SA 8 speed, or a Nexus4 (I have the Nexus, but the SA8 would be better), alloy wheels, skinny tyres, drop bars. I want to embarrass roadies. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1073/...6362ef.jpg?v=0 And another Moulton Mini, currently Single Speed, but soon to be 5 speed, with an old twin chain Sturmey Archer S5. Again, alloy wheels, but a gentle warmover, rather than full on hot-rodding this time, and period appropriate. It'll get a repaint, a big basket on the back carrier, perhaps a Brooks, and new wheels, and we're away. I'll probably transfer the fenders from the other Moulton (who needs fenders for out and out speed?). Anyway, quite a mixed bag, all in all! http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1113/...b471b7.jpg?v=0 |
Really not a commuter bike by any stretch, but certainly internal gear porn. Here's my 1940 Bates BAR, with Cantiflex tubing (bigger gauge in the middle, smaller at the ends) and Diadrant forks. It's got an SA FM hub, a 4 speed with fairly close ratios. It's going to be stripped, repainted, and rebuilt with Paris drop bars - gorgeous!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...2/DSC00183.jpg Here, in a part finished state is my Falcon urban assault bike. Built from a gas-pipe Falcon frame, just because I liked the orange, it's now got 5 speed Sturmey Archer rear hub, and hub brakes front and rear. I haven't got it going yet, because of a dispiriting tendency to blow every tube I put in it. Sorry, no pics in current condition! http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...2/Image110.jpg And finally, the Gentleman's Express, my lightweight take on a Raleigh 3 speed. It's an early Dawes Galaxy frame, 531, with alloy rims, and an AG hub (3 speed, generator), Brooks saddle, and nice lightweight fenders. Just needs some attention to wheels and tyres, and the BB and cranks fitting and it's done. I have so many projects, however, that it's languising a bit. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...2/P4020008.jpg |

Will take pictures of mine someday and post them up The seat post is a 3T 4GX Seatpost. It came with the frame when I bought it has a complete singlespeed off ebay for only 420 bucks. I thought it was a sweet deal for a like new 2007 complete surly 1 x 1 with new and like new components. Here is a link to the thread that has the list of the original components that came with the bike when I bought it: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...120&highlight= A few month later, I bought a new rear sun cr-18 rim with the nexus redband for about 265 bucks. A few months after that I ordered a front matching wheel with a surly disc hub. Now, almost a year later, I am waiting until I can afford the front disc as well as the few other final touches I plan for it. Once it is complete I will have a bomber single speed wheel set that I can sell to help pay for the bike, or keep and use it to switch up my riding styles when I have the urge. |
Hi, Sammyboy,
Nice collection of bikes. Question, though. Are there still many S-A Raleigh 3-speeds left in the UK and are they still being used? Or are cyclists riding mountain bikes nowadays? Just wondering. |

The ride (1986 Trek with 7 speed Nexus) and the ride home. I'm real please with how the handlebar setup worked out. On the left, a flip of a finger rings the bell from either position on the bars, and on the right, a flip of the finger or thumb shifts gears from either position.

Here's my commuter mixte, a shogun with fresh powdercoat and a Shimano red stripe 8 speed. It's a great commuter, I wish I'd been using hub gears much earlier:

I like those homebrew racks. Do you have any more pics of the building of them and how you did it? What kind of material are they made from?
OT: Anybody know why my pic disappeared? Since I`m a work and don`t have access to my hard drive, so I just linked to my post on another site (mtbr.com) and I don`t see the image here any more but it`s still there on the original site. |
