Thanks for biting. I was waiting all day to write that. In return I can only suggest that you get a new wall map. You know how world wall maps in the US, have the US in the center, Alaska on the left and Russia on the right. So Alaska and Russia look like they are on opposite side of the world and far away from each other. But in reality Russia and Alaska are only like a mile away from each other. Well, you could cut the wall map between your home and work and then tape Alaska and Russia sections together. That would put you home and work on opposite ends of the world and make your commute look really huge. Another option is to change your cyclo computer setting to a 1 inch diameter wheel. But then there is an added danger of getting speeding tickets. So it's your call on that. |

I had this scenario in college. Out the apartment complex, immediately hit a steep climb. 1.5 miles to campus. Some days I rode, some I walked, occasionally I drove.
This may sound stupid, but is moving an option? Seriously.. riding is a big enough part of my life that I weigh it carefully in all decisions about my job, home, etc. When I went into my job interview with current employer I even told them I had a riding lifestyle and asked if they had any problems with it. Not only would I not consider a job that was too far to ride to, but I'd probably not take one that was too close either. Or I'd simply move further away, assuming a decision like that was entirely my own (which it isn't - I'm married). You indicated that riding is a very important part of your life, and happiness counts... it doesn't make you mental. In your case, adjusting some part of your life to ensure you can ride every day isn't unreasonable. But, if it isn't feasible, I vote for an awesomely brisk 1 mile morning walk and do your riding for other purposes. |

But your trivializing Junior Membership status is indeed a serious matter. One which worries me deeply. In the old days one had earn it by going helmet head to helmet head with a vehicular cyclist. Sure... it was ugly, but the experience made one stronger. And if you ever came out on top, the mods would give you a star by your name. But sadly the old ways are going away. And as the traditions fade, we are left with merely considering sperling errors. Proper spelring never stopped a left hook by a cell phone wielding silver Astro van you know. Dammit, why do these red lines keep popping up? And as far as miss spellings are concerned, I can always go back and edit them. Ha, what will you do about it then? Yeah, I could go back and change them all. To a completely different subject even. And there is nothing that anyone can do about it. |
I can feel his depression. You need something to get your heart pumping in the morning. One mile just doesn't do it. Making errands just might work though. Especially if you find a useful enough reason to do it. Maybe theres a street beggar who always sits somewhere a few miles away. Make it a daily habit of riding up to him, giving him a dollar then riding back to work. Thats just one idea.

Create a regular route that takes ~15 minutes to ride that puts you at the base of your climb when you're warmed up. You may find you can approach the climb with more zest.
