This was covered already. Eating right before semi-/intense exercise isn't ideal because it puts an extra load on your cardiovascular system so it's not a bad thing at all to wait an hour after you commute in to eat breakfast. There is actually a benefit to doing this also which is you will burn "fat calories" during your commute which can help you lose weight.

The original poster said that he begins his ride 30 mintues after waking up. He can eat an hour after waking up which is great and he won't stress his heart this way. People that get up much earlier are likely better off eating right after waking up...before their commute.
I stand corrected. (or should I say sit on bike corrected?). I guess my perspective is a little off because my commute is late in the morning rather than like most of you 'normal' people.

Another reason why it's better to eat after biking is because when you exercise right after eating, you have to burn off what you just ate before you burn off any stored fat. If you exercise before eating, you burn off stored fat. So, as far as weight loss, it has more of a positive effect to exercise and then eat than the other way around.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned that part or not, as I didn't read every single post thoroughly.

I love peanut butter, but I find that it gives me some indigestion and um gas. I don't mean fuel.

I eat oatmeal in the morning. It's easy, and premixed with brown sugar and maple syrup; yummy. Plus some milk. Dairy is a good, easy way to get protein and fat in an easy to digest form (in moderate doses).

I thought you could only burn energy stored near the muscle. So you burn energy that's there from resting (but not yet fat) for about 20-30 minutes then you begin burning fat as that cannot be replenished at the rate you need it.

The advantage, for me, of not eating before is that I'll feel a little sick afterward and therefore not hungry. But three hours later I'll be ravenous.

Yeah, it's cutting a lot of oats into a single round shape.

Every morning I have a bowl of oatmeal with an orange and a glass of water, then have a shower. Then, I return to have two fried eggs on a bagel with peanut butter on it, (<-- this is very good, contrary to popular belief) then a shake with two bananas, soy milk, and health food stuff*. This keeps me filled until just before lunch. It sits nicely, too, although my commute is only 4.5 km. I recommend it if you can get around to cooking in the morning. It really takes very little time to do the eggs.

Eggs aren't always an easy fix for some people, but they are a good choice as we all know. Eggs are known as nature's complete food because of how nutrient rich they are. The first problem with cooking eggs is which way you want them cooked; however, scrambled makes a mess and takes (minutes) longer because of preparation and cook time. The second problem some people have with cooking eggs is that they can't flip them easily with a spatula. The problem is the spatula anyone who has been a cook in a breakfast restaurant knows you don't need a spatula to flip an egg. You do, however, need the right pan, find the right pan and cooking eggs takes a couple minutes with practice. The next problem is pan flipping an egg takes practice, however once mastered you'll be amazed at the perfection you accomplish. Plus, it keeps the annoying, clear, paper thin, yucky part of the egg out. Learn to flip eggs, most peoples diet could use a small energy rich food like this. To get some practice use a slice of bread in place of the eggs, and look up online a video of egg flipping, then don't forget to teach your kids... However, that can be pretty messy.

Secondly, invest in a $20 blender and start buying bulk frozen fruits and make smoothies with your eggs... or if you give up on the eggs, the smoothies are a great healthy meal as well. Just use milk and what ever fruits you like, add the milk while the blender is in motion and it will help unstick the frozen mass that wont blend. Be sure to only remove the lid of the blender once it is in motion... If you start the blender with out the lid you'll have a huge mess (NOT FUN!). Some people like to use yogurt for added nutrients, however, I find it makes the smoothy taste too sour. It's all preference, as I'm sure we all know. Try blue berries and avocado (some milk) it's surprisingly delicious! (No joke, it's really good)

I hope this helps,

boiled eggs are easy to cook
easy to eat
and easy to carry.

Lately I've been having a bowl of granola & milk before leaving (along with a glass or two of swee-tea) or perhaps a PB or PB&Banana sandwich on hearty bread once I get to work.

You can microwave eggs. Last year I would occasionally pad an egg or two. Throw in a few ingredients and take those to work. Toss into the microwave and you have a very easy breakfast.

Similar, but not identical. Rolled oats are steamed prior to rolling, in order to soften them, which destroys some of the vitamins contained therein... they usually undergo several rounds of this processing. In addition, oats sold for oatmeal often have the bran layer removed.

Steel-cut oats retain the bran layer, and processing consists of simply cutting them into two or three pieces.

My current favorite breakfast is two cooked eggs and two pieces of toast with mixed-fruit jelly.

Ah thanks for explaining it, always wondered what the difference was. Although I think I still stick to my quick oats. I just don't have time to properly cook regular ones.

psst...cold milk. It's faster, and healthier, than quick oats. It tastes differnet, obviously, but it's certainly good if you add the right things to the oats and milk. Try it once. See my "recipe" in one of my posts above.

I have a short ride (4 miles) so I vary it up to see what works best (sometimes for maximum energy and my fastest ride to the office; sometimes to see what will not make me hungry all day after the morning commute and keeps me fueled for the ride home). I treat it mainly as small experiments in hopes of finding the best combo for my more power-packed weekend routines--ussually involving cycling, running, swimming and weight-training. That ussually means that I'm always eating, but breakfast IS the most important meal of the day.

1. Cereal, eggs, toast and OJ
2. Oatmeal & OJ or Banana
3. Protein smoothie (especially after a night at the gym)--I call it a 'Green Banana'
-few handfuls of ice
-1 banana
-2 tbsp. Peanut butter
-5-8 fresh spinach leaves
-2 splashes fat free Milk
-1 splash OJ
-2 scoops (40-50grams) of Vanilla Whey protein
(Optional)
-1 tsp Glutamine to restore fatty acids and help muscle recovery
-1 tsp Creatine to encourage muscle hydration and growth

Cheers!
Steve

I'm trying to kick-start a little weight loss so I'm trying the empty-stomach ride this week. This morning I did 27 on just coffee, then once at my desk I had some yogurt, fruit, and whey protein mixed in skim milk. So far, so good.

no breakfast. i would be riding too soon after and I hate feeling heavy. Of course this is probably my body telling me "exercising on a full stomach is not good for us"!

So no food. Get to work and cool off for about 1/2 an hour then pop a cliff bar. Sometimes get some pastry or something else if still hungry. Oh.... and the coffee.

You and me both.
I did 28 this morning. It went pretty good until the 4 miles of hills at the end. My stomach was insanely hungry.
I actually started it last week and dropped 2 lbs.
I am making another go at trying to drop into the 150s for training. I am 5'9" tall with a skinny build. The 150s should be a better place for my weight.
