I run Shimano SPD-SL on my fixie. I tried the whole toe strap thing, but it was PITA. Clipless are so much easier.

Another thought:

The Raleigh comes with a flip flop hub... if you're not interested in the FG 'perks', have you considered just going single speed? You'd probably be perfectly fine with platforms in this case (if performance isn't an issue).
