I saw a girl in playing the recorder (yeah those stupid "hot cross buns" things you played in elementary school), while driving her car on the beltway in Baltimore. that was more scarey than cool.

and yesterday I saw a dead fox snake, run over by a car I presume. Also not so cool, definitely sad. I picked him up and set him off into the deep grass to rot in piece. Or be eaten by a hawk.

I think the coolest thing in the last few weeks has been that dog rubbing his face in the grass after he chased me and I pepper sprayed him..heh heh heh...revenge is sweeeet!

I also once saw a guy riding around with a huge axe slung over his shoulder. The cars sure gave him plenty of space!

It's amazing how much a little bit of weaponry expands your personal bubble. I used to carry around a wiffle-ball bat when I worked at Borders, and people responded much better to bad news (you'd be surprised how much of that there is at a seemingly calm place like a book store.)

The "recorder" used to be known simply as a "flute" until the tranverse flute which we know today stole the name. There was a lot of music written for it in the Baroque and earlier eras of music. So, was it an alto recorder? soprano? Great Bass recorder would be REALLY scary while driving. :D

This Monday I saw a padded bike carrying bag on the road side. Alas, no bike inside. Put the strap over my shoulder and carried it for six miles to get it home. No ID inside. Someone is out an Athalon bag.

Best thing I ever used was my sunday bag with a 9-iron and my 3-wood inside, looked like a rifle bag strapped to my shoulders. Cars gave me PLENTY of room.

A soprano recorder might be frightening as well, with the flock of bats following it and dogs becoming upset at the sound. :) Listen, if you dare, to the first Neville Marriner/Academy of St. Martin in the Fields recording of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto #4 for a piercing example.

So, when you play early music, do you change your posting name to "hautboyguy?" :D

slvoid: You just gave me an idea on how to make bicycles safer: make them out of 1 irons, 'cause even God couldn't hit a 1 iron.

... while playing bagpipes. No joke.

I was riding up the Williamsburg Bridge this AM, shortly after being nearly pancaked by a fixiehipster moron flying off the bridge at high speed, when I saw a guy manning a video camera on a low-to-the-ground tripod. He was filming a dude riding down the bridge path at a good clip while playing the bagpipes. As I passed bagpipes guy, or rather as he flew past me, I used my best William Wallace voice to shout out "SCOOTLAND THE BRAVE!!!!!!!!!!!" because of course that was the tune he was playing.

Only in NYC!!! :D

Those Williamsburg hipsters just keep trying to out do themselves....

;)

I carried a double-barrel shotgun a few miles across town on my recumbent trike one day. No one's given me any trouble since that day.

Not commuting, but on a mountain bike camping trip w/ my son in eastern oregon. Noticed a fresh, cougar-killed deer (still dripping blood) stashed away behind some rocks above me as we passed a long overhang. Yikes. Where did I put that mace? Noticed that the same deer had been removed by its owner when we passed by again the next day.
