I see the coolest @#$% on my commute
Today's episode: A guy riding downhill, no hands....
... while playing bagpipes. No joke. I was riding up the Williamsburg Bridge this AM, shortly after being nearly pancaked by a fixiehipster moron flying off the bridge at high speed, when I saw a guy manning a video camera on a low-to-the-ground tripod. He was filming a dude riding down the bridge path at a good clip while playing the bagpipes. As I passed bagpipes guy, or rather as he flew past me, I used my best William Wallace voice to shout out "SCOOTLAND THE BRAVE!!!!!!!!!!!" because of course that was the tune he was playing. Only in NYC!!! :D |
Dude, I would pay money to see that.

Wonder if/when this is going to show up on YouTube.

On my ride in yesterday, I saw what I thought was the presidential motorcade, but the limos weren't the president's bombproof ones. Either way, like 10 motorcycle cops, another 10 regular cop cars+SUV's, then two limos flying by. I was over on the MUP, so I got to pass a lot of the cars that ended up pulled over:). I would have preferred the biking bagpiper, but it was pretty cool. See some interesting stuff in a big city.
|
Damn all you big city folks. Motorcade prob UN or other foriegn dude.
I saw a young calf while avoiding cow pies. :P |
Yeah...I see some cute cows. The occasional fox. The not-so-occasional raccoon. Many, many rabbits. And of course the boring normal dog-walking ipod-listening MUP pedestrians.
|
Speaking of cool, I just read this article from the local news station. I guess it was only mostly dead.
|
whats a MUP?

Multi User Path.....Bike/Walking path.
It must be nice to have one that goes somewhere you need to go! The only place mine goes even close to, is downtown Grifith (Why**********) and about 3mi from the TREK store...... We NEED some more! |

Now we just need a guy juggling chainsaws as he rides down a hill :)
|
A couple girls in my neighborhood (8-12ish or so) were unicycling all over the place last fall. I saw them going to streets, at the park, the market and ice cream place. Did a lot better than I ever could on a unicycle.
Then I saw this (horribly designed) web site and wondered if they were competing: http://www.moabmunifest.com/ |
I saw a roadside memorial for a local politician that was killed in a head on that was not his fault. Paint and flare markers all over the road, funny thing is, he was well respected all over the county. :(

I've seen that guy in prospect park before! Well he was playing at the top of the hill during a race.

I saw two dead sheep and a dead dog today.

Mutton and Gaegogi anyone? |
I ride both in and out-of-town, and have to admit that I just don't notice that much in-town. I'm a nature freak, so it would have to be pretty outrageous for me to notice in town. Stuff that I see out on the prairie or in the mountains, however, can be pretty wild. To me, anyway. Let me see.
Young colts scampering across mountain meadows. Bighorn sheep licking road-salt along the edge of the road. Fields full of spring-time flowers that come into full and colorful bloom around dawn. Local rancher kids practicing rodeo events after school like barrel racing, roping, etc. (I was brought up in the city...really neat to me). Lots of stuff like that. The absolute wildest thing happened to me about a year ago, though. I was coming down this long foothill descent at about 32-33 mph, when 3 mule deer jumped out onto the road right in front of me from behind some shrubby willows beside the road. I hit the middle one. :o I walked away from it with some road rash and a big bruise on one shin where I landed on a rock. A guy that saw it happen, just happened to work at a High School just down the street from my house, and some 15 miles away from the accident, and gave me a ride home. I'm still riding that bike too, after replacing the entire front end. |
A few weekends ago I saw a man and woman on a tandem. The woman was in front and the man was in the rear playing a small guitar. They were cruising around West River Drive for a while. Pretty cool.
|
No handed and playing bagpipes? You're mistaken - he's obviously experimenting with the first cyclist airbag and trying to keep it permanently inflated.
|
You guys have way more interesting commutes than me. All I see is corn, corn, and more corn. Thus the name the Cornhusker State.
|
I saw Clarence Carter making sure his woman sassafied
|
I once (no, twice, actually) saw a guy in a formal business suit, with a briefcase in one hand, riding up a vicious hill... on a unicycle. The same hill both times, the same time - it appears that he was actually a commuter. A pretty neat sight, if you ask me.
I also once saw a guy riding around with a huge axe slung over his shoulder. The cars sure gave him plenty of space! |
Well today I saw a guy -- on the same bridge, go figure -- on a tallbike or something like it. Looked totally ridiculous to me. OTOH, he sure was visible in traffic after getting off the bridge's MUP.
