Starting a new build: Steelwool "Sweet City Limited"

After asking here for options for frames that were steel, lugged, braze-ons, horz dropouts.... i ended up choosing one of these and placed my order. Not sure how long it will take to ship from Canada. It's not a replacement for my Riv but will be used for lighter road duties, paved trails, and occasional commuting. The only thing it was missing from my requests was more braze-ons but I only plan on adding fenders right now anyway. I'll be building it up with a brown brooks b.17, cork grips (stained to match the brooks) on a silver Origin8 Space Bar. It will either be a single speed or I'll be using the i-motion 9 internal hub i ordered for the Riv. Might just use it on this build and keep the Riv traditionally geared... for now. But we'll see. I need to coldset the new frame from 120-130mm to use the new rim/hub. The eccentric bb shell is an awesome idea. I'll be able to do a tire rear tire change much easier than track ends, especially with fenders. And the chain tension will be set and forget. And then still deciding on other parts. I'll probably update this thread as things progress.

I may use a few parts from my IRO ss build or I may just sell it whole on craigslist.

Also selling my Electra Straight 8.

This is the pic from Steelwool's website.

Cool, there about 25 minutes down to road from me. I like the Tweed, and maybe when I become Independently wealthy I'll get me one.

$550 CDN doesn't seem like that much for a frame and fork. personally, besides the paint job, i think the tweed has one the greatest set of features i've ever seen on one bike.

Ya, I almost went with the Tweed but wasn't crazy about the color and the giant downtube sticker.
It has a few extra braze-ons and room for even wider tires... neither of which I really need. And cheaper paint job. Great bike though. If it looked like the Sweet City I would have gotten it.

Um,

That ike in the picture doesn't have the horizontal dropouts that you specified.....I hope it's not the exact model you ordered.

Re-read my post.
That's the beauty of this frame!
It has an eccentric bottom bracket so you don't need horizontal drops. The ease of vertical drops with the single speed benefits of horizontal without the negatives of horizontal.

What's that little dent behind the bottom bracket for?

I actually really like the color on the Tweed. However, I am a sucker in general for dark green colors on bikes.

Guess what showed up today!

Just finished coldsetting the frame from 120mm to 133mm to fit the SRAM i-Motion 9 hub.
That was scary!
But Sheldon didn't let me down. Here's his cold setting article if anyone needs it...
https://sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html

The frame is a really nice piece. Beautiful metallic blue paint, polished lugs and a nice laser cut steel head tube badge. I'll get more pics later when it's light outside.

I knew you could set that frame. Good looking frame. What type of bars are you going to use?

I have an Origin8 Space Bar sitting here but will have to see how it feels once everything else is assembled. Bars and stem will be the last things I decide on. My other options will probably be the nitto noodle bar that I have on my Riv, or maybe the On-One Midge bars.

Here's a few detail shots of the frame. Meanwhile I'm getting the correct BB spindle length sorted out... should be able to install the bb, crank and chain tomorrow. Maybe the headset too.

That is handsome. I was seriously looking at the Steel Wool line when assessing new bikes (a road or cross bike that could take tires in the 28-32 range.)

Amazing, I didn't know that existed at all. I had to look up what that was, so I don't really know much about the EBB, but is it possible to install one on a normal mountain bike frame. I got stuck converting my mountain bike to a fixed gear because of chain tension issues (that and the freehub) and I hate the look of a chain tensioner.

The BB shell is oversized in order to hold the internal eccentric shell which in turn holds your standard bb.
So no, you couldn't put it in a normal frame.
But if you don't need to run an internal geared hub, you can try the eno eccentric hub.

That is awesome! Unfortunately, it's pretty expensive given that I could hate having a fixed gear. Maybe when I get some extra $$ I'll put it into the hub. Thanks for the info though.

Have you ever tried to find a 103mm BB at your local LBS? Yeesh! I don't think one exists in Houston. Sugino even recommends a 103mm bb for their track cranksets yet even the urban hipster LBS didn't have anything near that short.
So for now I ganked it off my IRO.

Here's a couple quick pics of how my Frankenbike is coming along.
That stem is temporary. I use it until i decide what angle/length stem i need.
And my nice straight chain line.
And wait until you see how freakishly large the i-Motion shifter is.... maybe tomorrow. It's gonna look like poo.

Sure would be nice if sram would do a brifter for roadbars for the I9. Would be cool with the nitto noodles. Those On one bars are looking pretty good too. Keep the updates coming.
