Do they make a decent pedal that could be used with sneakers if your just going short distance. Like a platform/clipless hybrid pedal. If i decide to ride long distance, i will want to clip in with some proper shoes. Right now im just using the stock pedals, they are not that great..

does such a pedal exist? There are so many choices, and im confused

I've used Wellgos with good results, they used to be a bit cheaper than the comparable $himanos too. It's been years since I bought my current set, so I have no idea of current model numbers or pricing.

I've got Crank Brothers Acids on my commuter. Not a problem with outdoor style running shoes with a moderate tread. I paid about $30 to $40 on ebay. The Mallets might be even better. The nice thing with the Crank Brothers pedals (if they're comfortable for you) is that they're platform and clipless on both sides.

I'm pleased with my Shimano 324s. They're a bit on the pricey side, but Performance has a cheaper knockoff that goes for 35 bucks. When I took a quick glance at them at the store they seemed to be nearly identical.

I have Wellgo WPD-WG5 on my commuter, and I like them fine. Good, sturdy, rubber-edged platforms. SPDs on the other side. Real convenient.

How far is a long trip?

Best thing I did was stop using cleats or "bicycle specific" shoes . Now I never worry what shoes I'm wearing, just hop on and go. Your LBS should have some in stock, just be certain to get the correct thread, as they are popular for BMX bikes.

I have these on two bikes. Perfectly adequate.

I just bought a pair of the m324s along with a Cateye LD1100 taillight from a dealer on ebay for about 88 USD shipped. Haven't had a chance to install them yet, though. If you have any other items you have been thinking about picking up, I bought mine from a seller named "buildyourbike" and was able to combine the shipping the two items. I would consider going that route. There was another seller named "buildurbike" which did NOT allow you to combine on shipping.

I ride the welgo version. I love it, for the long commute I clip in, for the beer run I use tennies or sandals and the flat side....had them for a year, and even did a 700 mile tour using them.

+1 on Forte campus. cheap and good.

Have any of you tried the Power Strap. It is a strap of reinforced fabric that you put your foot in that is added to the pedal. I wear dress shoes to work and don't like to switch shoes and carry all the gear, etc. They have worked great for me over the past 7 years of commuting. They don't mess with my shine and I feel more connected and efficient on the bike.

How about for Time pedals? I posted a new thread about this today without noticing this one. Here is my question:

I don't see any profile shots of the pedal that would show if the binding is flush with the platform or if the binding stands proud of it. I want to be able to just jump on my bike to ride around the neighborhood with my son without having to do a costume change (shoes).

Also, does that platform make it more difficult to clip in? Do you have to shave off some of the sole of your shoe?

+1 on those. I got them from performance a few weeks ago when they were on-sale around $57. I looked at the Forté campus pedals as well as they are almost 1/2 the price, but some of the reviews mentioned that they broke a bit easier than one would expect. I figure that I ride my bike a lot and it sees all kinds of weather so an extra $20 now hopefully gets me a set of pedals that will last a good long time. I also have the PD-M520 on my road bike and those are just fine as well, but those are SPD on both sides. I like having the option on my hybrid. So far I have only ridden on my SPD shoes since I put the pedals on, but if I need to do a quick grovery store run it would make more sense to have regular shoes on.
