I visited 12 LBS while shopping for my last bike, some several times. I found most fairly good, although a couple were unhelpful, forcing me to ask all the questions, and not helping narrow down choices at all. In the end I think it mostly came down to the individual shop assistants. Some were great, some were terrible.

So I'd be very careful of making any sweeping generalisations about LBS in general.
