To Hell with Canadian Geese
 

My morning commute in Central NYwas disrupted by a considerably large number of Canadian Geese - and their new families. There's got to be a way to eliminate these things - they're highly aggressive and they don't fully understand where they sit on the food chain. Problem is......you can't get around them. Where's a good hunter when you need one. Why don't they just go back to where they came from - Canada!

Not that you care, but it's "Canada" geese, not "Canadian" geese.

The solution around golf courses is to get specially trained dogs to chase them.

The crap all over the lakefront path. But that doesn't bother me too much.

Just like the Canadians, coming to the US and sitting in the middle of the road. This is the final straw. Dispatching geese to hurt our infrastructure is low.

To those who don't know... When geese attack, they attack from the air. I hate that.

You just need to convince your local government that you have a plan to feed the homeless and clean up the waterfront pathways at the same time.

They are going to take all the good jobs from the American Geese. We need to put up a big net at the border.

I hiss at the geese... they get out of my way. ;) Just gotta talk to them in a language they understand.

I haven't run across any geese since I got my air horn, but that might work, too.

I go through a flock or 2 walking around every day. Sometimes you have to slow, down, make noise, and pick your way through. Biggest problem is the poop on MUP...ew.

(If anyone was thinking of naming their band "Poop on the MUP" I already have it copyrighted.)

So what happens if you hit one with your bike? I mean, both physically and legally.

I haven't hit one, but I'm guessing the impact of bike against goose wouldn't be too bad. If the goose is still on the ground, the rotation of the wheel would tend to knock the goose downward, then it's just a matter of surviving the wump-wump. Not too different from a dog. In my experience, though, the goose gets airborne and attacks the bike or its rider. Once one few straight into me from the side, fortunately hitting my leg, trying to bite me on the knee while I was pedalling wearing jeans. No harm done. I was just glad the goose's head didn't go through the spokes, 'cuz I was moving right along.

We have lots of geese here along the river bike paths and yeah they can be a pain at times, but seriously get over it. Ranting about geese interfering with your biking reminds me a lot of motorists who don't want to share the road with bikers or deal with pedestrians crossing the road. Sure your experience won't be optimized when you have to make allowances for someone or something else, but it isn't your planet.

I'd love it if I could bike around town unhindered by cars, pedestrians, geese, other cyclists, etc... I'd also love to date a super model - neither of those things is going to happen so I just accept it and get on with life.

Maybe you need to get ride of your pie plate.

I like them. They're pretty birds, and it's fun to watch them taking care of their chicks. They seem like very watchful parents.

They do poop on everything, though. They don't seem particularly aggressive, at least around here. If you come towards them they'll move away from you.

I recall seeing a news item about Canada Geese that had become non-migratory, and had set up shop someplace nice in the US. The local solution? Culls! They took out a certain percentage of the population with a scythe or something. There was the further suggestion that they give the meat to the local shelters to make gooseburgers for the disadvantaged. If you've ever had goose, it can be excellent, but usually only after they have finished their migration and are all lean. Once they've had the chance to get fat, it's pretty gross.
