Nope... that isn't even close to ugly.

Buglady 06-16-08 11:59 AM

I just found a Free Spirit on the Used Calgary page that's a twin to my Raleigh. I think I'll have a look at it - I know Free Spirit had very uneven quality, but if it's in anything close to decent shape I may snag it for a friend. I'm on a mission to get everyone I know off mountain bikes and onto bikes that are actually designed to be on roads and carry stuff :D

Sixty Fiver 06-16-08 12:02 PM

Buglady - Your mission is my job and if you are ever up in Edmonton you should stop by the shop to say hi.

I had a young woman come in with a low end Raleigh mtb yesterday and ride out on a rather minty Sekine road bike... I think her commute will be far more enjoyable this week.

My old commuter (which still lives on! I gave it to a friend at work when I bought my new bike.)

Here goes. My 1988 Specialized RockHopper. Uglified with a matte black handbrush paintjob so it wouldn't get stolen while I was at work.

Sheesh. I must like bikes waaaaay too much. I haven't seen anything here that'd I call "ugly" yet. A couple might be a little rough but thats it.

What's the stem on your Bridgestone? I'm looking for a slightly taller stem for my commuter as well.

NOW were talkin'. Props to A.K.A. Fred Bridgestone, as well. Strangely, though, I like the red fenders.

It's the stem that it came with; seems to be stock. It's a really small frame, so I'm passing that bike down to my 11-year-old son who's going to ride to middle school on it. It's getting a bit of a makeover first.

Preach it, brother!! :D Right now my focus is on finding something for my sister, who has a semi-crappy mountain bike that does not fit. It's her birthday in a couple of weeks and I want to surprise her with a city bike that's ready to go on grocery runs and out for pathway rides. She probably won't commute, since she works at night and would be looking at about 40 kms round trip, but she did specifically say she would like to do weekend rides and errands. I am hunting for a mixte, ideally!

I'll definitely stop in if I make it up north. Actually I'm hoping to ride the Tour d'Alberta in July so that gets me in the area anyway.

Check your PM's, I have a question about a Raleigh Twenty.

Wow how long it take for bar tape and hoods to look like that?

It's a shame I don't have a picture of the other side. It's splashed with John Deere green, Grabber Green and pink spray paint. If I had that pic it would win for sure!

the funny thing is that it was very comfortable and surprisingly practical. It wasn't the best trail machine because there wasn't much weight on the front wheel and the bars kept getting caught on branches. But for commuting and just riding around it was amazing

I was sure it was a winner! :p

I used to ride a VERY ugly rig. It was soooooo ugly that, get this, I didnt bother to take a picture! Thats probably the same problem your having with all these good looking "ugly" commuters. I would take a picture of my old rig but I took it to Burning Man last year and I got soo destroyed I really didnt think it was even worth cleaning.
