My Atlantis can take wide nubby tires so technically I could take it on the mtn bike trails and it would do ok. Is it the best bike for the job at hand (mountain biking in this case)? No.

Ok, I have a 6 mile commute on a combination of OK to good quality roads and bikeways. There's a few hills and sometimes there's a nasty headwind. It's important to me to make good time and to be honest, I like to go fast. I'm quite comfortable in a forward riding position. I've got limited space to store my bike at home and at work so I hang it up. Having a light bike makes this easy. I also like to take some longer rides on the weekend.

What's the best bike for me for the job at hand?

Whichever you like best!

Personally, this is where I like having a good all-rounder. If I could only have one it would be my Riv. It's great at what I do most, and can do most other things when it needs to... albeit not always as well... but better than a road bike.
Again, this is just me.

If YOU like doing fast club rides and stuff on the weekends you'd probably want to stick to the road bike, especially with the short commute on nice roads. Road bike = fast so why not?

In San Jose, though, that doesn't stop many people from commuting on their road race bikes and so in that respect, the two worlds do collide. I often see guys on their road bikes who are wearing backpacks, prsumably with their work clothes.

Most of the guys I see are indeed wearing bike clothes; some are less flashy and more utilitarian-looking whereas other guys are wearing racy-looking road kits the likes of which you'd see on a group ride.

In any case, road bikes make great commuting machines, though they're definitely not for everyone or all circumstances.
I wonder if that's me you're looking at going downtown and through san carlos into stevens creek.
