Finally made the round trip...
So I finally did it...
I have been making a one-way trip into work 14 miles for a few weeks now.. once a week as I get into better shape. Yesterday I made the round trip for the first time. 28 miles, and working a 10 hour shift at a moderately physical job where I am on my feet all day long.
It was rough and I realized that there is a LOT more uphill on the way home.. had to stop more often and I'm sore as hell.
I don't know how.. but I pulled a muscle in my ARM..
but feels good to accomplish this..
I did this in a TREK 3700 with slick tires.

Yay!
Since you obviously have a way to get the bike between work and home, maybe do the trip home by itself a couple times so you can get used to the hills?
Oh and re-reading I see that you're doing the one-way thing only once a week. I think probably most people work on doing the one-way trip multiple times a week, maybe almost until they can do it every day of the week, and only then start tackling double the distance in one day. It might get you into shape faster too to do smaller workouts more frequently.
Of course I have no idea how (in)convenient it is for you to transport your bike without riding it.
Anyway, yay for 28 miles!
