Today's lesson in Cycling Safety: The Five Layers of Safety.
1. Control your bike. Don't fall off of it, run over anything, or collide with someone else. 2. Follow the rules of the road. Don't be the cause of a traffic crash. 3. Watch your positioning in the lane and roadway -- Discourage others' mistakes 4. Watch out for the other drivers -- Avoid getting caught up in their mistakes. 5. If you are involved in a crash when any of the above 4 principles fail, you need the passive safety devices that will help you survive or mitigate injury -- this means a helmet and gloves as a minimum... And just because other road or path users act like asses doesn't mean you have to mimic their behavior. Be humble, be courteous. Show your class, less you demonstrate you don't really have any. |
