Thanks for the info - I was ruling out the BB/crank because I had swapped it out, but since the swap out BB was also an exo could still be the problem. Will check it out.

I ride in at just under 10 miles each way, it is 7 miles direct but I go on the local towpath which runs right behind my place of employment. Currently I am riding in two or three times a week on my Trek 7500 FX.

3.5 miles from South Philly to Drexel.
Geez how are you doing 8-20 miles... are you even in Philly?
As a side note.. don't take Market street down from UCity to Center City... there are idiots who try to run all 4 lanes in the middle of the day... I don't they realize they're faicng 4 lanes of 40+mph traffic...

Thanks for the info. I ride the only bike I have, a Trek 4300 with knobby tires, to work and back. I am wondering how much easier it would be on a road bike with skinny tires. I have never ridden one before as I primarily enjoyed offroad stuff in the past.
Sub 7 mile trips up and down Atlanta hills on the mountain bike can be a bit of a workout. Plus my right knee has started to give me trouble. Do you long distance commuters think a road bike would be worth the purchase? If so, could you throw out suggestions? I don't plan on doing 80 mile rides on the weekend; just 13ish miles a day back and forth from work.
Thanks.

You don't necessarily need a full-on roadbike. Putting 1.5" slicks on your MTB will improve things quite a bit. What is your budget?

Well, after reading a number of other threads about knee pain I don't think it is the bike necessarily. I think I am going to try slick tires and get some "clipless" pedals. If that doesn't work maybe I will consider the newer bike.
Currently everything on my bike is stock. I am hoping a few upgrades might make the commute more enjoyable.

What kind of knee pain?
I recently had issues with my right knee. It was a slightly off center front knee pain.
Results:
1) Riding fixed gear contributed to my knee issues
2) I moved my saddle up and back
3) The shoes with my road bike had the cleat slightly out of adjustment left to right.
With the adjustments to 2 and 3 and changing to a SS I still have occasional knee pains. Consequently, my winter project this year will be to add gears to my Salsa frame retiring the SS\FG aspect that has caused me issues. So much for that experiment.

No knee pain since 2005, still riding 48/16

23 miles round-trip on my 07' Specialized Hardrock Sport with Michelin road tires. 98% of it is on a MUP, and the rest is on campus. I could go the short way which would be only 13 miles, but that would be over 3 huge hills...and it takes less time to go on the MUP.

about 4 miles total..nothing really, but get's me awake.
the ride home is a nice little work out since it's 4 miles of gradual up hill.
So i usually will just go ride at night 8-12 miles around town. Or ride to a destination for whatever i need..still need to get a rack though, getting old with the back pack.

Sometimes common sense just smacks you in the face with a trout to get you back on track.
I have been exploring roads on my commute that would allow me to customize the mileage so that I could try different things, but there weren't that many options that were realy bikeable roads that were safe.
Sooo.....I have to go to teh chiropractor today, which is in my town, on the other side of town opposite work, and plotted it on mapmyrun, and voila-15 mile loop.
I only looked at routes between A and B-I never though to drive backward to Z first! By heading to my town's downtown, I get a whole bunch of options that can be expanded or cut short as time and energy allow.
Suffice it to say that I am an idiot.

18.5 miles each way. Riding from south Philadelphia to the northeast part of the city. Today was my on my Panasonic DX-4000 and tomorrow I'm toying with the notion of riding my Stella fixed gear conversion. Al least once this summer I'm going to do a different bike each day: Panasonic road bike, fixed gear, 1965 Schwinn tandem, Specialized mountainbike, I guess motorcycle on Friday.

Bikes: '06 Specialized Roubaix; ~'93 Specialized Rockhopper
19 miles each way, 1993 Specialized Rockhopper rigid steel with 1.65" slicks most of the time, but if it's really nice out and I don't need to carry stuff, I'll take my '05 Specialized Roubaix. Regarding the road bike versus mountain bike question - as much as I love my Roubaix, the roads are so bad on my commute that the old steel mountain bike with high volume tires is much better. I can knock off about ten minutes by riding the Roubaix, but that's not much over a 1 hour (1:10 on Mtn Bike) ride.
For the guy with knee pain - if you get clipless pedals, check out the Speedplays. I have their Frogs on the mountain bike, and just got the Light Action pedals for the road bike. They let your knee find a natural position because they allow your foot to rotate freely.
