hmmm, considering there are so many freakin bikes in copenhagen i wonder if the theft rate is still lower than most cities here.

I was just wondering if maybe some of those thefts are thefts of already stolen bikes by the original owner.

Gee somewhat like San Diego... Where the average year round temp is 64 degrees... and where you'd NEVER find such a commuting crowd*...

*unless it was an organized ride... but the fact is finding regular cycle commuters like that is not the usual case for cities in the US.

Possibly posted elsewhere but I'll re-link for those whom may have missed.

An American's tour and perspective of Amsterdam's cycling culture. Quite humorous at times.

I'm guessing that must be some kind of organized ride. I have never seen _that_ many all at once (and look at the other side -- very little traffic).

Edit: I don't live in Copenhagen, though I go there often, so I'm prepared to be corrected by 'en rigtig Københavner'.

I live in Portland and some nice summer mornings I swear Vancouver/Williams is just like that. ... ok maybe not SO many bikes but I have had to wait through lights! and more bikes than cars if it's nice.

Loved those pictures.

I've done the stupid cell phone thing myself. Ended up riding right through wet concrete on the trail I was on, while my mother screamed at me through the phone about how unsafe I was. I've seen alot of kids around here riding on pegs in the back. No helmets. They just work together.

...I guess when you get comfortable with a situation, it's easy to do some off-the-wall things. It might even be safer than the things drivers do when you've got a reasonably skilled rider. Since you actually have to feel all of the shifts in balance and bumps in the road, there might be some advantage over car drivers who just roll over anything in the path.

Hey in the good old USA we have to lock up everything. Nice video I would love the chance to ride in a European country. In Rome saw thousands of Scooters every where rain or shine winter or summer.

WTF ... no one taking the lane and riding on the street?

With those motor vehicle speed limits, I would be taking advantage of taking the lane and just go.

There were alot of cyclists using the bus lane to pass slower moving cyclists. There was also that crazy SUV driver that used the bus lane to pass slower moving cars on the right.

From the video description:
Tens of thousands of people commute by bike each day via Torvegade in Copenhagen. Here's the crush of rush hour - sure beats the honking and fumes of rush hour in NYC!

OK, I have to admit, I had a little help. This was the backup resulting from the raising of the Knippelsbro drawbridge. It took quite a while to clear the backup (note how orderly everyone is, for the most part staying in the bike lane) - and there isn't much of a backup of cars or trucks!
It's interesting that all the riders are keeping about the same speed. There's not a lot of passing.

Top Biking Cities in the World

Notice Copenhagen: #3.

The city with the sixth-highest quality of life in the world is also home to the world's most successful community bicycle program. In Denmark practically everybody has a bike, and for many years Copenhagen has been known as 'the city of bikes'. The city of Copenhagen plans to double its spending on biking infrastructure over the next three years.

Currently 32% of workers bicycle to work and 50 percent say they cycle to work because it is fast and easy. The city's bicycle paths are extensive and well-used. Bicycle paths are often separated from the main traffic lanes and sometimes have their own signal systems. Already one city neighborhood, the notorious commune Christiania, is completely car-free.
Who's #1? Amsterdam.

Amsterdam, a.k.a. the bike capital of the world, has 40% of all traffic movements by bicycle. They have created a bicycle friendly city that promotes a healthier, more active lifestyle for its residents. An extensive network of safe, fast and comfortable bicycle routes has been developed, the road safety of cyclists has been increased, a
theft-prevention program was set up as well as the number of bicycle sheds increased.

Amsterdam is undertaking an ambitious capital-improvement program that includes building a 10,000-bike parking garage at the main train station
I'd like to see a pic or movie of Amsterdam during rush hour.

When bike lanes or sidepaths are present, usually not.

These are great, but I got really irritated by the fact that every caption ends in "while riding on a bicycle in Amsterdam".
