I mean, look at your example talking about the gym: So you drive to the gym, spend 6$ on gas, exercise on a treadmill, then you have to eat more again to recoup the calories and you didnt even drive.

no matter how you slice it riding is cheaper than driving.
Not to mention lower medical costs over the course of your life...especially at the end.
