Not sure why people think that a woman with a personal trainer is somehow below them. I know two women who commute to work and also use a personal trainer at the gym. Just riding a bike isn't enough; you really should do weight training as well, especially women, to keep the bone mass up.

That's how I look at it. Mind you, I grew up playing outside, climbing trees, falling off my bike, all that stuff... the gym is just WAY too boring. (I don't have the attention span for TV, either). My college offers a free gym; I have done a couple of fitness classes there just for fun, but I can't see a once a week bellydance class making much of an impact on my overall fitness level! And I never seem to find time for the weight room, pool or indoor track.

I just feel weird in a gym. I'm not an athlete... I just like to ride my bike a lot and be active. I can't really relate to the people I meet in the gym, it seems. (And I feel self conscious in my ratty old gym clothes... I spent all my money on bike accessories!).

I took a summer job at a pet food store. Yesterday I lifted at least sixty 35 and 40# bags of dog food (it was one of those days that everyone needed the food that was on the bottom of the stack...). My sister took up rock climbing. That seems to be pretty great for core and upper body strength!

I like going to the gym.

I like trying out the different weight machines.

I like swimming.

I'd like to learn how to surf.

I don't understand why people like yoga. But I've accepted the fact that people will pay to do what interests them. Like skydiving. I don't want to jump out of a plane, but other people want to give it a whirl.

Basically, if you want to do it, do it. If you don't, don't. Your nickel.

Riding my bike is still number one in my heart

I use a gym for the free weights. I don't have those dumbells/benches at home.

Well ... you are right on the point.

Many years ago I built up some muscle at the gym, it was a start.

Now you cannot pay me enough to be at a gym.

A vote for resistance (weight) training. Do the upper body, and legs too! Have a home gym if possible, and an away gym to prevent stale workouts. Workout every other day, take week or month long rest breaks periodically. Get some kind of instruction (net forums, personal trainers, friends). Observation: It's not common to do a lot of weight training and cycling together.

They have yoga classes around here for cyclists. It sounds interesting to me since flexibility and cycling is helpful. Now if I can just get past the whole yoga thing and try it. Just sounds ... fruity .... and this coming from a guy who wears lycra. Guess I should get over it and give it a try.

I've just ridden almost 20 miles to this same gym and I see this woman, dressed in black tights pushing this punching bag across the gym floor from one side of the gym to the other.

Somehow I managed to contain the laughter building inside me and walk past her, her trainer and the punching bag to the changing room. Inside I'm shaking my head thinking about the contrast between myself and this person who likely drove a giant SUV from her home to the gym, only to be barked at by some man and coerced to push a punching bag back and forth across the gym floor. Then it hit me. The reality of my mindset came crashing down on me like a pile of chrome-plated dumbbells. Stupidest thread ever.

You've profiled this lady who has a membership to the same gym as you, and goes there at the same time as you. The only difference outlined in your thread is that she works out there while you just go there to shower. Your personal profile picture is of you in a car.

Gyms are rubbish. They are over priced. The only factor i can see besides getting in shape while going to a gym is the possibility of meeting an nice woman.

but mostly it's a meat market, and over priced.

you can do sit ups, push ups and lift dumbells at home..free, and oh ride your bike for the cardio.

To the OP...for all you know the woman is a professional kick boxer who rode her bike to the gym to train.
If she happens to be a BF member, the real funny part will be when she kicks your butt up around your ears the next time she sees you!

No, its still missing something, even though one ankle biter type poster has already started yipping. What it needs is the other type of jerk who brags about ignoring someone's posts and then makes nasty comments about the content based on snippets taken out of context. Rates at least a 9 on the 1 to 10 scale for self righteousness ( or maybe its just stupidity) on BF.

I have no discipline to go to a gym and enough smarts to realize that and not get a membership. That's why I commute is to get the exercise I need in a way I can maintain as part of just normal daily routine.

Been meaning to ask who you are a RF for?

I'm on the deathstar in network Supply chain.

You are right up the road from me. I live by FF on Canton rd. Was that you blowing past me the night of the blue grass event in Woodstock?

Yoga looks easy; it ain't. Or at least, it's not as easy at it looks. You have to stay focused and keep your muscles tight during the poses to keep proper form and balance. Some forms of yoga are harder than others and will make you work up a healthy sweat.

How do you know she didn't ride 20 miles in on her bike?? Nothing wrong with training in a gym, ie pushing a punching bag. Don't assume you know peoples lives until you walk in their shoes...

Another possibility: some women just don't feel safe riding or running outdoors, so they drive to go places and use a gym for working out.

A good gym with all the bells and whistles is actually the greatest reason I can think of that I'm thankful to live in an advanced civilization. Weight equipment, sauna, pool, stairclimber, and lots and lots of eye candy. To me this is worth paying for.

Oh, and yeah, it was a little elitist of you, but we're all guilty, especially when we see so many single-occupancy SUVs being driven back and forth from the gym.
