Looks cool vs. IS cool
I was sitting at a stop light the other day (in my car), and there was a middle age balding man in a black Porsche convertible in front of me with music cranking. Next to him at the light was a full-on "Fred" commuting home. All I could think was "The guy in the Porche thinks he is cool, the guy on the bike IS cool!"

I'm a Fred, and proud to be.
Porsche-boy likely paid six figures for his ego-stroke (unless it was a Boxter or Cayman, which still ran him more than I paid for my house.) It didn't make him any prettier, now did it?
Yet here we are, grown men & women, pedaling our toys to work & back... and getting leaner, more buff, and just plain better looking every day in doing so.
That's cool.

You know, one day last week I pulled up next to a similiar Porsche driver on my bike. Waited for the light to change, he was stuck behind traffic, and I peddled on by. Priceless.

Yea, it couldn't be possible that he just earns a bunch of money and enjoys nice cars...
I've owned nice cars in the past and it had absolutely nothing to do with impressing other people. Same goes for my relatively expensive bikes.

You seen any of those Porsche Cayenne SUVs? Now there's somebody compensating for something, but I
can't imagine what it would be... "Hmmmm... Y'know, my a** isn't big enough. Think I'll get me a big fat a** car
to make me feel better about it."
Also, and this is SO SAD... Porsche markets a mountain bike under license from one of the bigger brands... Giant, GT, somebody. BMW, Jeep, Hummer, even Ferrari do stuff like that. Can you imagine riding a Porsche bicycle? What would the guy in the droptop said had he seen that?
No word on whether it would spin out of control if you abruptly stopped pedaling while in a corner...

We're just poking fun at them-what-has. We-what-don't-have do this. Class struggle is just part of the human condition. If I ever become one-what-has, I'm sure I'll take some heat for flaunting it.
I sure would like the opportunity to see if I could handle it.

People probably look at the dorky clothes I wear while riding and think I am not cool, but I really don't care. I ride for me.
I think riding is very cool.

I think a person can strike a balance between style and function.
Going too far one way makes you a d0uch3 and too far the other way makes you a jackass.

Not to mention which, the Porsche thing isn't just class struggle, around here those guys are some of the most pointlessly aggressive drivers. But I've lived in areas where 'Porsche Boy' was replaced by 'Corvette Boy' or 'Monster Truck Boy'. It's not a money thing, for me anyway.
