Sorry to hear you'll have to cut your commuting back. I had some bad neighborhoods that I started with, but was able to find some decent alternatives, but added quite a bit of climbing and a little extra mileage. I now commute about 34 miles per day, and it's great. I hope you find a way to still commute at least some of the time. +1 on the Brooks saddle and Schwalbe tires.

If the riding commute means as much to you as it does to me then drive your bike around to a spot where you can ride in and avoid the bad spots and still get in some decent mileage.
For me riding IS my gym membership. I'd hate to give it up or even significanty reduce it due to something like a move.
