The other day i saw a cyclist with an ipod but he didn't have the earbuds in! Couldn't quite snap the photo in time as i was in the middle of texting while riding.

Just make sure you keep falling on your head and you will be able to keep those stories coming.

Right, well, I don't plan on having any more if I can help it. But if you want to, you go right on ahead and have many more accidents so that you can tell us how your helmet saved your life each time.

I was about to say that if I were carrying my helmet around, the easiest and most logical way to do it would be to put it on my head. Otherwise you've got a helmet bouncing around and getting in the way.

But then I realized that when I get off my bike, I take my helmet off immediately. I'd look like a tool just walking around with a bike helmet on my head.

Now that school is back in session, I see teenagers from my neighborhood doing this all the time. I suspect that they wear it out of the driveway and around the corner. Once they're out of mom's sight, the helmet goes on the handlebars.

When I'm feeling snarky I'll ride up alongside and say "Hey! That's a really cool hemet! But, uh, I don't want to embarrass you or anything. You know it won't work unless you actually put it on your head, right?"

I'm gay. I have no issues with helmets. But it's hell finding the right bars for my limp wrists.

I will admit that I do this occasionally. I have a second job as a waitress and it's only about 1.8 miles from my home. It's hot and sticky here so helmet head is even worse than normal. I wear it on my way back when it's dark but rarely wear it on the way there. Vanity is a terrible thing!

Because accidents happen on purpose. Putting a helmet on should be part of everyone's pre-crash checklist.

If you are not planning for an accident, why wear a helmet? When I see someone with a helmet and first aid kit, I wonder ... what have you got planned? Are you a planner? A schemer?

However attractive you may already be, I'll guarantee you wouldn't look half as sexy hooked up to a feeding tube.

I tend to take my helmet off for the last mile of my commute in the mornings, during my cool-down period. I like my hair to dry out a little bit in the last mile. That area, for me, is a VERY sedate backstreet through the business park with almost no cars at all when I'm coming in. So I don't feel unsafe [or I wouldn't do it]. I actually strap the thing to my rack, just to keep my hands extra free, just in case.

However - I forgot my helmet yesterday [no freakin idea how that happened, I just walked out the door without it and didn't realize for 4 miles]. And um... I'm alive today. So that's nice.

People seem to think helmets only save lives. They also can save you from a lot of other less drastic situations than death. Talk to the people who were wearing helmets when they crashed that are now alive but have any of a HUGE number of neurological issues, equilibrium issues, vision issues, neck problems, back problems, etc., and I guarantee every one of them hates their ongoing medical problems but are thankful they had their helmets on when they crashed.
