Hi,

With the days drawing in, it's definitely time that i got some lighting sorted out for my commute.

As usual, i want to be a little different and get something that i can fully mount on my head rather than the bike itself - probably on a strap that i can put over a beanie hat or helmet.

I've seen a few headlight-only options on eBay (basically for fishing etc) but was wondering whether there was something a bit better with front and rear lights and perhaps a battery pack on the side - otherwise i shall have to cobble something together myself.

Whether that's advisable depends on your road conditions. With a light mounted very close to your eyes, you will not get any shadow from potholes or other similar road hazards. A helmet-light-only solution would be suicide for me. I mount on the handlebar, and am about to buy an accessory bar to drop them down another 4 inches or so.

A helmet light as an add-on can be advisable, and may be all you need if your roads are relatively smooth and hazard-free.

The more i think about it, the more i think it would be a little bit risky.

My journey is less than a 2 mile round-trip on fairly well lit town roads and i intend on wearing a fluorescent jacket so it may or may not be enough to use head-only lighting.

The most dangerous part of my journey at the moment is carrying the bike down the steps from my garden to the path - it's going to be lethal once it gets properly dark

I picked up a 105 lumen Coleman head lamp for $24 from Wally world. Does the job to my satisfaction. Most of commute has street lighting, but there are those sections that are almost pitch black. I haven't had a prob so far. I'll probably add additional lighting as funds become available because I'd like to have more than the one bright source plus blinkie.

I find a helmet-mounted lamp useful in catching motorist's attention. I use one similar to this one. I bought mine at Target under the brand name River Rock, but I see they no longer carry that one. It has been replaced with a model that has the batteries integrated with the headlamp (the one I use has the batteries in the back of the headband, and I like how it balances.)

A few of us down under use these on our helmets. I love 'em. Point your head at a tin top at junctions and they think they've just been in a scene from close encounters of the third kind. Awesome.
