Cantilever mount racks

I've seen a canti boss mounted rack on nashbar a while back, for dirt cheap. I guess they discontinued the item, as I can't find it anymore. Are there any other racks like this that's fairly cheap? I think nashbar's version was under $20.

You know I'm looking for just such a front rack myself. I recall seeing some on ebay...

bkbrouwer 10-14-08 03:47 PM

Is this the one?

I think you have to order from over seas or catch one on ebay.

cman 10-14-08 03:53 PM

I bought one on ebay from this guy. I think they are Nashbars racks. I contacted Nashbar and they said the most recent ones were sent back because the hardware was wrong. The only I found was the rack need some tweaking to fit over the brake bosses

Velo-orange has them but there all $100+.

The quality and ruggedness is much better.

Velo-orange has

$60

I bought one of the NASHBAR ones a few years ago to mount on my Bidgestone xo-2 and it wouldn't attatch to the canti studs on my front fork. Tried modifying it to no avail and eventually made my own. The orangevelo one is probably best option, Rivendel has a same one one made by Nitto that I think runs about 80 bucks.

availpunk9 10-15-08 11:07 AM

I think I'm going to try the ebay one. It's for a project that I'm not quite sure will work out. I don't want to drop $60-80 for something that I might not be able to use.

That guy owes you a commission. I have been looking for a front rack for one of my bikes, and that rack is a perfect match to the rear rack, (bought from either Nashbar or PerfBike), so I bought it. Thanks!

I have that rack, too. Purchased from Nashbar a couple years ago. I've even hauled a microwave on the damn thing...not that I would recommend exceeding the rated capacity.:)

Damn! How much drag does it put on your generator hub to run that microwave?

A little more than the Xtracycle blender. :) http://store.xtracycle.com/_e/Bicycl...3_Solo_Kit.htm

I have this one & like it.

I bought the one on EBay as well but there were no instructions although it seems pretty easy. I just wonder though, it seems that the weight put on the canti bosses all the way out on the end would put some serious leverage on them..anyone have any experience with problems related to that or brake issues?

I don't think it's much of a problem. In a very hard stop (near lockup of the front wheel), I think a rough estimate of something well in excess of 50% of your weight ends up stressing those canti bosses, so 10 or so pounds of cargo on them shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks!
Hadn't thought of it that way!

Nashbar seems to get in small orders of them randomly. I got lucky and got one from them for like 12 bucks a while back. They were out within a couple days.

barturtle 10-17-08 02:04 PM

Question: Has anyone actually tried the bag that they sell to match? I've been thinking it might be good for assorted junk. Any idea how big each section is?

fuzz2050 10-17-08 06:45 PM

Try emailing Nashbar incessantly asking for the rack, it's item Na-Frr if it helps. That's what I did and after a week or so, lo and behold they were for sale again. Coincidence, or an entire batch manufactured to satisfy one nagging client? you decide.

That being said, it works great with a medium sized load, and was a breeze to mount.

DO NOT BUY FROM THAT ******* EBAY SELLER!!!
The moron shipped the rack in nothing but a *paper* envelope!
So I now have a bent-up rack.
I just sent the idiot an ultimatum to refund everything I paid.

Update: The seller was responsive to refunding the purchase price and shipping costs, so I will amend my rant to a neutral rating.

i'm thinking of getting one of these racks ... can they work with old style cantilever brakes? or would i need to switch to v-brakes?

knobster 02-20-09 03:02 PM

I've got one that I am not using. No idea where the hardware went, but it's setup to mount. Free to anyone that wants it as long as you pay shipping.

MNBiker 02-20-09 04:07 PM

How about this one currently on sale for $9.99 from Nashbar: http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...cat%3A%20Racks

It looks like this:

http://www.nashbar.com/nashbar_photo...-NCL-ANGLE.jpg
I do wonder if the technique they use for mounting makes me have to either leave off my front reflector or mount it somewhere else. I imagine front reflectors might be the law in some states.

knobster 02-20-09 04:24 PM

It comes with a mount for your reflector. It mounts on the front of the rack.

Works fine with old school wide cantis (I have mine over Tektro CR720s). Works fine with narrow-profiles too (had Tektro Oryx before the CR720s).
The only thing you may have to do is lengthen your straddle wire to fit over the fork crown mounting tab for the rack.

Careful of that mount. Mine broke after too many miles of harsh roads and chip seal, but thankfully my reflector didn't end up in my front spokes.
I've heard of ppl having issues with the crown mounting tab breaking, but mine has held up well. If you're worried about it, fashion a stronger mount from some 1/16" strip steel from the hardware store.
