I think it's like chocolate. Everyone likes it but when you eat it every day it's not a pleasure anymore. And thus you have to try it in different variations, like a chocolate cake or chocolate ice-cream to regain any fun of it. The same is with commuting. After the daily commuting you have no enthusiasm left over to go for a pleasure ride unless you will try to do something different on your bike, like an extreme ride that will rush adrenalin to your blood or something similar. Use cars for commuting and leave your bike for a pleasures desert. Thats a DrFreud's advice

Commuting definitely doesn't interfere with my cycling. I have, however, done fewer weekday morning rides with groups. Not due to lack of time or energy. But, with the exception of a fast group on Friday mornings, I find them too slow now. I'd rather do intervals or a high tempo on the way to work. My commuting rides have become more intense than most of the group rides I do. As a result, I have become a lot faster. I always attend the fast Saturday morning ride. I find the more I do & harder I work, the more I enjoy it.

Commuting is riding, the idea that it's not seems to come from this roadie idea of "junk" miles. But then I will talk to roadies who only ride a couple of times a week at best. Having to ride your bike to work is great motivation to get the miles in. Plus, I think I'd go nuts if I rode with a group everyday.

Of all the people I ride with for fun, I think there's only one other who rides to work. I only have one gear, which makes me the big stud. Sprinting through traffic on the way home, only to go hammer for two hours makes me tired. Sadly, it hasn't really made me faster.
