And in fact I don't care what someone on bike is dressed in as long as they aren't interfering with my ride or pissing cagers off so they see me as the next best thing for retribution.

And as for myself, I'll experiment with all kinds of clothing, as long as it ends up working...it's good.

No you're not. That's exactly what I'm saying.

Really though, it doesn't matter that an overweight person wears roadie gear. If anyone is wearing the same clothes as a group of people while a) not at work as in uniform, or b) not paid for it, I find it pretty lame and ripe for ridicule. If you were to come to Miami and see the various groups of people who do this perhaps you would see some validity to my comments, though at this point I don't expect anyone to agree...it's just my opinion.

DataJunkie 12-10-08 01:39 PM

There are plenty of judgmental folks on this forum that will agree with you. I personally find your opinion distasteful but it is opinion and just that.

zeytoun 12-10-08 01:42 PM

what about vigilante groups? is it lame for them to dress in a uniform if they're not paid or at work?

Bat22 12-10-08 02:01 PM

Like when the Guardian Angels visit Boston?
I'm glad they wear berets.
I still won't trust anybody with my bike.:)

These discussions always get silly on here. People don't get this bent out of shape about wearing the same shirt for adult softball, soccer, or basketball leagues. If you are riding with a club, then what is wrong with wearing the club kit on a 2+ hour ride with 15-30 of your club members? AND what is wrong with being comfortable, and not caring about what somebody that has very definite ideas of what type of tribal "uniform" you must display to be acceptable every minute of the day?

I also don't wear trousers when I go swimming, do gardening or house repairs in a wool or silk business suit, etc.

The "superman" or "think you are a pro athlete" perspective never crossed my mind before coming on here. I don't think that when I see guys at the gym that use a weight lifting belt (not everyone that wears a weight lifting belt is competes in Olympic style lifts), or people that wear sneakers to run (as opposed to heavy steel-shank work boots, or office shoes), etc. Well...there are always those people that do things like wear time-trial outfits every time they go out for a little spin (usually the ones that ride less than a couple of times per week), or play golf with a set of clubs that cost more than my car, etc. THAT happens with any sport or activity, I think. Some people think that they can buy their way into just about anything.

Biggest size in stock 33.. biggest size overall 38.. That ain't happening :(

The description of "medium relaxed fit" through the thighs and "super tight fit" below the knees wasn't really promising either. Let's check those measurements again:

38" waist
35.5" inseam
13.9" thigh <---

Are you kidding me? How is this possible? (Then it occurs to me that they've arbitrarily changed the dimension that they're measuring from circumference to seam-to-seam flattened width. I should try that in some of my engineering layouts.) Which makes the measurement almost 28" around at the thigh which in my case is still not going to be a comfortable fit.

They just don't make hipster gear for Sasquatch.

Don't forget your $100 T-shirt to go with your $360 pair of jeans. Biggest chest measurement available = 40"...
Not hapenning unless I want to shoehorn myself into it like a benching shirt.

What about a 41 year old Cat 3 who's riding to his day job while wearing his team jersey? The jersey advertises the local bike shop that's the name sponsor and main subsidizer of his racing. While he isn't paid in cash to wear the jersey, it's been provided to him at a subtantial discount, along with race fee reimbursements and equipment deals?

Is that lame?

My company has Tour de Cure "teams" for both our Washington and California facilities. We all wear the same jersey with the company logo. We're not at work or paid for our cycling. I guess that makes us pretty lame, huh?
I'll inform Honeywell, Amgen, Microsoft, and the Red Hook Brewery crew that pawn says we should knock it off.

No..
People observing a 41 yr old man riding down the street, then making assumptions about his riding ability, then making personal evaluations whether or not such individual really is "qualified" to wear such a jersey, then forming a conclusion that he really must be some form of "faux elitist cycling poser" because at the time he may be observed traveling only XX mph, and after all... he 'is' wearing cycling specific clothing and god forbid... he may have a bit of a pauch.........etc...etc...

Now 'that's' lame...

I wear my Nascar shirt to drive my car, so no reason not to wear a bike shirt to ride a bike..

Now wearing an "American Standard" shirt to go to the bathroom, now that's a reach... :P

Since the riders are comfortable and ridicule's the most fun an ignorant person can have, this is a win/win for everybody!

Maybe the utilkilt is a lower (somewhat :) ) priced option http://www.utilikilts.com/index.php?page_id=27

Seriously, I really think it is form follows function......

If I am going to make a quick errand run I grab my utilyt Japanese 8 sp (82 nishiki that looks/functions like the classice english 3 spd...search for pics...I've posted it a bunch) .wearing what i have on.

If I am doing a short commute (under 6 miles or so) I grab the same bike, put on spd touring shoes, wrap a rubber band around the right pant leg and commute in khaki's and polo shirt.

If am doing a longer commute or going on a training ride I grab my 89 Miyata and put on bike shots, shirt and the look cleat clipless shoes. I change at work.

Bicyling clothes meet bike specific functions and that makes a difference in efficiency and enjoyment for me. I.e I don't have to wear bike clothes on longer rides, just like I don't have to pump up the tires, but I will have a better experience.

Most of my biking I wear street clothes, but it makes no sense to me to hide "bike clothes" when they are needed for function. (of course right now mine are a bit of a tight fit...so others might with for for a cover up for aesthetic reasons :) )

DataJunkie 12-10-08 03:55 PM

If I only had the cajones to wear a utilkilt.

damn... the camo version is hardcore.
Kinda makes me want to donn the facepaint....sheath the buck knife.. and raid the neighboring village.
Of course, I'd just settle for that nice "airy" feeling.... :D

I just want to make sure I'm getting my money's worth. I might settle for skintight with a giant fur collar and cuffs, it was something nice, like chinchilla.
