Nokian Hakkapeliitta's 106 carbide studs per tire make winter riding much more enjoyable!

But winter takes its toll. I switched to stainless cables.

Yup, built within the last 6 months, I'm assuming. They are still producing these at a massive scale in the Netherlands.

I still say you can make them more reliable by tightening the spokes, whatever the rims are.

True to a certain extent, but some rims design and the material used just makes them inherently flexier, especially under a strong or heavier rider. For example most low-end Alex rims I've come across (like Alex DA22) are "soft", and go out of true by a big amount just from stress relieving the spokes...

Deep V rims on the other hand are extremely rigid thanks to the amount of material and the design. I've got a stock pair on my 09 Paddy Wagon which gets a fair amount of abuse jumping/dropping off curbs and carrying 20kg loads in my panniers, yet both wheels are only out of true by about 2mm after months of use. :)

My new commuter! Columbia Tourist V. I bought it off of craigslist for $80.00 and I have no idea what year it is. She has what looks to be an Eagle 2 deraillieur. Tires and cables appear sound but it's time for fresh cables and new inner tubes just to be safe. She even has an old license plate. I'll keep it on 'cause it adds class. I love the fenders, they have an almost Indian Chief look to them. I ran out of blinkies so I need to run to walmart for more lights. Bell came out with a real good 3 led headlight and I like their vintage looking blinkies.

My Big Buzz

1 Attachment(s)
Recently decided to get my first bike since I was in high school...Picked up a 2008 Novara Big Buzz.

Mostly stock other than the accessories (rack, fenders, panniers, etc)

I have a 6 mi commute to work each way and it seems to be serving me pretty well so far.

I updated the specs on the bike at Commute By Bike: http://commutebybike.com/commuter-bi...uct.php?id=258

Enjoy!

What is your tail light?

wristwister 04-09-09 09:16 PM

Here's mine! Got a whopping 58 miles on it, 28 of those being my first and only (so far) commute to work.

Here's mine for now. I see chuckfox's bike and now I want baskets and gonesh9 makes me want some stickers too. I am currently trying to make the transition to road bike riding. With drop handlebars and clipless pedals, I only thought I knew how to ride a bike.

Please tell me you don't ride with your saddle so low. And if you do, please tell me you have an 18in inseam or something.

gemini_6369 04-10-09 08:22 PM

Well, this bike is WAY too big for me. It is a 19" and I am only 5'1". My road bike is measured to fit but I got the Marin from someone else. I am thinking about selling it to get one that fits me better. I love it though with the Nexus inter 4-speed, I hate to sell it. So I look like a dork with the seat that low don't I? Low rider....LOL

Amani576 04-10-09 09:12 PM

Oh, alright. No hard feelings meant. Just a pet peeve of mine to see a saddle so low.

Dorkism is very subjective. My buddies tell me my bike is dorky, but they`re wrong and they`re stupid :D
Nexus 4? That`s kinda cool- I don`t think there are many fours floating around. When I was shopping and researching for my Nexus, Harris still listed them but they were eternally out of stock. Might still be listed and still out of stock, for all I know.

Nocturnal 04-11-09 04:10 AM

She's all bundled up! I like the bags...actual bike bags or something retooled? I just got my LHT too (in Truckachino) and fitting it out. Maybe ~100 miles so far and it's been great so far. How you liking the ride?

No hard feelings taken, I wish I could lift the seat up. :)

That thing's pretty suave. Unusual to see a SS/FG bike come stock with an external BB crankset too.

Here's my "new" commuter bike w/ homemade fenders

My latest commuter bike is a 1996 TREK 1220. I made fenders out of free scraps of coroplast from a local sign shop.

Second Stem - Bar for Arkel Handlebar Bag

Finally, somebody asked about the second headset! It's for my Arkel Big Bar Bag (still on back order). I have the second bar at home. Needs to be cut though, but I have to wait until I have the bag to see just how long to keep the bar.

The two bags are 5-way bags from Out Your Backdoor. They are actually smaller than they look in pictures. But still enough to carry only the essentials. I still need my small cooler. I also carry a very compact backpack, which squashes up so small, I can put it inside my pants pocket, cooler, or even one of the 5-way bags!

I only had my Trucker for seven days ... then the accident! Hopefully will be ready to ride sometime next week ... All my bags -- Arkel Big Bar Bag, Carradice Long Flap, and four Ortlieb panniers with outer pockets, should be arriving soon!

I was still getting used to riding the Trucker, after riding my Townie for a little over a year, and my Switchback for about 17 years. I don't like the bar-end shifters. The saddle is very uncomfortable!

Since I rotated the bars, my knees aren't hitting the shifters, except sometimes when I'm starting off from a dead stop at a signal light.

The Trucker handles very nicely all around town! I can get up to speed (for me around 15mph) quickly. The 1.75 inch tires seem to handle the road very well, even the rougher roads.

Loaded down with stuff, including groceries, handles very well! I don't even notice the two 5-way bags, both on the left side. I thought for certain the Trucker would feel off balance, but I can't even notice that at all!

When I get the bike back, I'll need to test ride for a few miles to see if the brakes, including the interrupters, are adjusted correctly, before I rewrap the bars.

Add another LHT

I like the setup, but happy that I don't have to worry about that much gear! I mainly use my pack or a single pannier to work. Here's a pic from a few days ago enjoying the first day of sun in awhile on the bike path. Thinking next of maybe flipping the bars but that might be too low. So far, so fun!
