JTek (the ones who do the Shiftmate) just came out with a barend shifter for Alfine 8-spd hubs, and they say that they're working on other versions. It's a step, at least.

I'd think that if Shimano came out with brifters for their hubs, they wouldn't be able to make them quickly enough.

A few upgrades to the Dumpster Queen as a result of my visit to the bike swap meet today-

1. Aero brake levers
2. Specialized seat
3. Kickstand

Mmmm, post the whole bike please!
I've got a 520 of the same color, mostly stock except I built it some Mavic A719/Deore LX wheels (the hubs are originals but the original rims weren't good enough ;)

You ask for it, you got it.

I love the Dumpster Queen, Doohickie. I'm gonna have to do my impersonation of Ceiling Cat and start peeking in dumpsters.

The Sram Dual Drive II has something called a trigger shift. Looks like a lever version of the grip shifter. I haven't looked too closely because I don't want to be upset I don't have it.

Nice bike Brian :)

Have fun commuting on that.

I like the shifter setup, it is unique.

I had this bar tape on my wrecked Nishiki:

Considering the red saddlebag, and the red Raleigh headbadge, I decided to use it on the Dumpster Queen.

.

Uhhh...Shimano has had a trigger shifter for their IGH for a couple years. I have the Alfine shifter with my Nexus-equipped Commuter 3.0. (Just got it Saturday but it's a 2007).

Nobody makes a bar-end or brifter. My point is that flatbars and risers are covered, now they need something for drops.

I'm digging the suicide shift though. Let us know how it works for ya...

bkbrouwer 01-14-09 12:58 PM

So far the suicide shift is working out well. Makes me shift a little less (which I like). I also like that I can remove two screws at the bottle holder and switch right back to SS or fixed come summer.

Hey guys... I started a new blog on commuting and am looking for contributors. See more here.

Thanks for reading!

That's a good looking bike. Looks so together and fit for the job. Like the shifter, at least it works.

I have seen a few of them fiited the ends of the drops bars as well.

What is the hub like ? I am thinking off building new wheel with the same hub... :thumb:

Man, I love this bike! I also rescued a Raleigh Marathon (same color and everything). It is now happily employed as a fixed gear for my buddy's commute from Bountiful to Salt Lake. Isn't it amazing how a new saddle and aero shifters clean up that old frame?!

jmccollister1 01-15-09 12:27 PM

Stock Globe. Somebody has a newer one, I really like the new fork.

Actually, yeah, it is. Before (the day I got it out of the dumpster):

After basic cleanup (different saddle but still older style):

After new saddle and aero brake levers (still have stem shifters):

Nice! As far as angles go, I'm pretty tall and find them unnecessary. I'm playing down on everything, so there's no chance of damage (like when you see sky high flat cymbals ala Travis barker). When I have the 2 rack toms up they get angled, given the 24" kick.

Photos of "New to Me" Brodie Ocho Commuter

I found a lightly used Brodie Ocho about a month ago. I've added:
- Planet Bike Cascadia Fenders
- Axion Disc Brake Rack
- Mirrcycle Mirror
- Velovision grips
- Bar-end bell
- Mounts for Dinotte 800L & PB Superflash

Before I start commuting on it and get it covered in dirt, here are a few photos and a link to my Ocho gallery:

Nice Brodie! I'm jealous.

Are those 700c wheels?

700C wheels with Alex rims. I put on some Schwalbe Marathon Supremes in 700 X 37C for a really posh ride.

Compared to mounting fenders and a rack with disc brakes -- the flamingo was easy :)
