I've looked through a lot of these posts and I'm sorry, but some of these bikes are really, really ugly. And I'm not kidding about that. Can we get an aesthetics moderator on this thread?

When it comes to getting to work, or running errands, most people would much rather have an ugly, reliable, practical bike than a pretty bike that's more likely to be stolen when locked up. That's actually part of the reason some are ugly. Though, personally, I can find the attraction in each and every one of them, they all serve a different purpose for each person that owns them. I seriously hope you were joking... This thread doesn't need a troll running around. Sorry not everyone can have a "gorgeous" bike, not everyone wants one, or can afford one.

Four years of membership, and that's the best you can do for a first post?

Its a shame you feel this way. I for one enjoy this thread, I like to see what others ride and the ingenuity some have in creating stuff to meet their needs. I personally think you have missed the point of the forum.

You, my friend, need SS/FG.

Post X-mas update:

New GR-9 pedals and Selle An-Atomica seat. I think I am about done with additions and will be enjoying it in its current state for quite some time. Just looking for a bit larger saddle bag and I'll be done... for now... ;)

Ugly compared to what? These are commuting bikes. Personally i find a nice single speed / fixed bike much more pleasing to the eye (there are exceptions, check the jackass thread over the forum), but these are different bikes serving different people. And honestly the road bikes posted in the roadie forum are the worst :p I still enjoy looking through all of them though.

Tell me about the rack. How do the bullhorns work with it? How much was it? Is it hard when you've got a heavy load but only one gear?

I've been thinking about turning my Trek 610 (currently my road bike) into a FG townie (when I get a cyclocross bike in the next few years), with a CETMA rack, fenders, and flat bars. But if I could use bullhorns without them getting in the way of the rack, I'd like that better as it would allow me to use the aero levers that I have (like the Schwinn Madison that just got posted with the bullhorns). Alternately I could use mustache bars.

The reason I want to do this is because I love this bike, and it's a little bit small but not small enough to warrant selling it. It's got great horizontal dropouts and clearance for fenders, so it would make a good FG "ute" bike in my opinion.

I'll be posting some new pics of my bikes pretty soon here, too.

Thanks. I did it as a quick cheap fix for the bull horns, but ended up liking the looks and how they felt, and of course, Im cheap. lol.

ryan. 01-10-09 12:04 PM

Paul,
The rack is a CETMA rack, and I payed $100 (not including shipping). The rack works wonderfully with bullhorns. I've had a variety of cargo on the rack already, ranging from a 20lb gym bag, groceries, and even my sister. The handlebars have not gotten in the way in any situation. One thing I've noticed, however, is that with a large cargo in front, it's hard for me to use my Fenix headlight mounted on a lockblock. I have a headlamp that I might start using in that situation.

As far as riding with a load on a fixed gear, it's definitely doable. I commute in Georgetown where we have some pretty big hills, and I've only had to dismount and walk the bike up one time (it was also because I just came back from playing basketball and was dead tired). Anything above 50 lbs on an incline will be tough without gears though.

i have a rack for it, but i don't use it that often, i . . . guess you could call it a commuter, it's for a night on the town mostly :-D or in my case the city

This is my new bike, a Christmas gift to myself. :) 2008 Trek 7.3 FX. I used to commute on a full-suspension mt. bike, an Iron Horse Warrior 3.0, but this one does my hilly 19 mile rt commute with less effort. Plus I can carry a lot more with it.

stomppow 01-10-09 06:07 PM

the bike with the Miche seatpost- is that a Trek 520? With metal cable housing???
Mmmm, post the whole bike please!
I've got a 520 of the same color, mostly stock except I built it some Mavic A719/Deore LX wheels (the hubs are originals but the original rims weren't good enough ;)

Updated Pictures

Well, here they are, as promised.

Trek 610
I ride this most of the time. Recent additions include: Thomson Elite setback seatpost, Tektro brake levers, Serfas saddle, bottle cage, Planet Bike Superflash Stealth, Time ATAC Aliums, and Trek Interval cyclometer.

Trek 4300
This is my "worse weather" commuter. I ride it in anything short of ice and hurricanes. Thankfully neither are common here. :D

Are you sure you didn't click on the "riding the 30 year old clunker to work" thread?

Nicely done.

paulwwalters 01-11-09 10:14 PM

You'd think that in the year 2009 SOMEONE could offer a IGH with an alternative to grip shifting...

Nice bike though. It's just sad that with all the plethora of parts available they have yet to fix that problem.
