If you do a quick google search for it you'll find quite a few recipes for it. It appears that there is some difference of opinion as to what it is and how it is made.

Exactly. Works like a friction shifter, but the swing/cable pull is only long enough to shift one gear; not enough to shift over three rings.

Hi all. I'm noob to this forum. But I feel great to be around here, learning and getting inspired by your sharing. Anyway this is my commuter bike that I just acquired last month (2nd hand) for around $200 from a nice gentleman, fellow cyclist who's got too many bikes around. It's a 2009 Felt QX75. Most components are stock, except for the pair of Conti Gatorskin tyres, Topeak Super Tourist DX disc mount rack, classic Japan made fenders, Topeak Road Moprh pump, bottle cage, bell, head and tail lights. Been riding it in the past 2 weeks for my (almost) daily commute, between 15-25km depending on my destination for the day (school or office or both), and liking it a lot!! Since the time I took the pic, I have upgraded the pedals to a pair of white Wellgo V8 copy flat pedals, coz the ones on the pic was already worn out. Planning to upgrade the front mech and crankset to Deore set (the crankset is already creaking), the handlebar to trekking bar (to get more handling positions), and the cantis to v-brakes when the budget permits.

With some nicer weather here I broke out the BRC the other night.... the STI's are not as cold weather friendly as the friction shifters on the Extrabike and it was nice to run skinnier tyres in the snirt.

That is very impressive! A banana seat on a magna frame! How many of the original *mart parts have you had to replace? Looks like original brakes, I see you dropped to SS, and what's that on top of the downtube -- reinforcement? magazine stand?

Seriously, this bike is charmingly offensive. I like it.

The banana seat accommodated carrying a small passenger and the wooden board was their foot rest. The seat and trick bars provide a very comfortable riding position. Don't need multiple gears for flat riding with young kids. Four gears were removed from the 5-speed cluster for simplification (didn't have a SS freewheel) and to continue running the thin chain. A 70's Schwinn badge was added to the head tube to confuse people...really gets them scratching their heads. Just added the 24" aluminum rim to improve braking when wet at the expense of patina. Wish I could add front shocks but won't give up the basket for carrying backpacks, gallons of milk, etc. Oh yeah, been through a couple sets of used pedals, too.

Almost finished with my new commuter build. Still deciding on a handlebar and have new wheel set parts sitting on my bench waiting to be laced up.

In Mexico, this bike would have foot pegs front and rear, and carry a family of 5 (once I saw 6, counting an infant in a sling).

Yeah that 38mm is a bit thin looking. Once the fender goes on won't be so obvious. Thanks on the light set up. Dual cygolight 700's on brackets I made out of spare kickstand parts.

agmetal, I like your bikes and your project. I made a commuter bike out of a mid-90's Bianchi Volpe. It weighs almost 40 lbs. What does yours weigh? I have a rear rack, a dynamo hub, headlight and tail light, and fenders. Despite the weight, it runs so well and fits me so well that it doesn't feel very heavy.

No idea on the weight...I don't have a bathroom scale or anything at home, so I've never attempted to weigh it! It doesn't strike me as terribly heavy, though, especially when I have my u-lock in my bag, as opposed to the rear rack. It actually feels quite light without the lock on it!
